Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Post by Kong Wen »

This game is really cute and smooth so far. I know a lot of us on the forum & the Discord have picked it up and are working out way through it, either solo or with local friendos/kiddos.

My first impressions: the levels are designed with a lot of care, they feel jam-packed. After playing and enjoying a lot of other takes on the platformer genre, like some hardcore Meat mode ones, and more adventurous ones, then coming back to Mario, you really are reminded that these Mario games set the bar. Very tightly designed and balanced. Crafted to be challenging but not frustrating.

I played through the first world on my stream. I'll probably continue playing through the game this way, just to make it a little more community fun. Feel free to hop on whenever I'm live! We can even jump into one of the game's online rooms and help each other's ghosts. :D

I'm having fun with the game! I'm taking it real slow, only on world 3 now.

The best thing I can say about the game is that it feels very refreshing. After so many NSMB games, it's great to have a new, lively art style, new music, new level concepts and a focus on creativity within the levels themselves. Every level has at least some moment that makes me smile.

Control wise, I miss the triple jump a bit, but the levels weren't really designed for it and I appreciate how Mario feels much snappier than the previous games. Badges so far have been a bit situational more than anything, but I can see myself trying to beat the whole game using the non-stop running badge at some point!

So yeah, enjoying it a good amount. Interested to see how I'll feel once it's over and how it ranks among all the other 2D Mario games.

I'm even taking it slower, just arrived at the islands after world 1. Still have to beat one 4-star level from world 1, but for now I don't need to. Didn't understand the badges until I got the 3rd one .. just learned how to float as elephant with the cap and than it was gone a few levels later. Anyway, I'll be playing this Mario game for a long time. Probably still not done when MP4 is released :P

I've been messing around with the online a bit more. At first I thought it was all too distracting, but I see the collaborative aspects of it now. It's neat!
