VHS Camcorder

Post by Kong Wen »

This isn't strictly gaming related, but it is retro tech, which still fits the bill for TONe interest!

There's this app called VHS Camcorder on the iTunes store that basically acts as a video filter. There are some tweakable options (you can go OG square aspect ratio or widescreen, you can toggle the time/datestamp and even spoof the date, etc.). There's also an option to add extra tracking/wear effects when you move/shake the camera while recording.

VHS obviously has a lot of hipster appeal, but it's also fun for those of us with fond '80s-'90s retro nostalgia. It's not free, but it's cheap, and I'll probably give it a try. I might record a video of my nephew playing some anachronistic game like Super Meat Boy. :)

I'll be interested to hear how well they pulled this off, Kong. Galak-Z manages a reasonable interpretation in a very limited way (pause screen), but it's notoriously hard to nail. For Alien Isolation they went so far as to record elements of the game with an actual VHS camcorder, then filming the TV as it played back, futzing with tracking, etc.
