#BGE2020 - Round 1 - Pool 39

Post by This Old Neon »

Welcome to the first round of #BGE2020 pools!

Each game is randomly seeded into pools using the set generator at Random.org. There's no seeding, no ranking, and no preference or prioritization.

The results of the pools will determine how each game stacks up in the elimination rounds, coming later this year.

HOW TO VOTE

Voting is ranked, but it's not super intuitive, so listen up.
  • You have 6 total votes to distribute.
  • You can only select up to 3 options.
  • You can only give each option up to 3 votes.
  • NOTE: The number you pick is not the RANK of your choice (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd), but the number of VOTES you're giving it.
  • The more votes (bigger numbers) a game gets, the better for that game.
EXAMPLES
  • You could pick three games and order them by giving them 3, 2, and 1 votes.
  • If you like three games equally, you could give them 2, 2, and 2 votes.
  • If you only like two games, you could give them 3 and 3 votes (or 3 and 2, etc.).
This gives you a lot of granularity for how you assign your votes and thereby a lot of influence over which games can do well. Use your power wisely!

If you have questions, ask before voting! :neon:

I gave Superhot a couple votes for being fun and innovative. Great use of VR. And Alex Kidd in Miracle World for being a good bad game.
I’ve been waiting for the sun to come up. Waiting for the showers to stop. Waiting for the penny to drop. One time. And I’ve been standing in a cloud of plans. Standing on the shifting sands. Hoping for an open hand. One time.

I've only tried non-VR superhot, but I could see how the concept would be great in VR.

Superhot is crazy in VR. It's a worthy game in its own right (interesting strategic first-person shooting), but VR really takes it to the next level. Great showcase of the hardware/tech, too.

My second vote was Blades of Steel. Had a lot of fun with that one growing up.

I considered something like Harvest Moon for my third vote, but instead I gave it to Astérix, which is one of those well-executed platformers that came out on an early system (SMS) after the next-gen had already launched.

Assuming it's the same Asterix game that came out on the Game Gear, it got a vote from me. I enjoyed it. NSMBW and Beyond Good and Evil also deserved votes. After the major disappointment that was New Super Mario Bros. (DS), the Wii game was a great step in the right direction.

What was wrong with NSMB DS? Was my first 2d Mario after World so felt like a huge upgrade.

It was too by-the-books and easy for my tastes. One step forward, two steps back. The generic bosses felt out of place for the 2D Mario game, as well. NSMBW, on the other hand, had more memorable new powerups, more memorable boss fights, a difficulty, and the introduction of four player couch co-op. Much better, and overall a more memorable experience, than its DS predecessor.

I agree with this assessment. There was nothing outright bad about NSMB... it was just so pedestrian and uninteresting, and felt a lot like a weird spinoff (which, to be fair, it was). The Wii entry was more interesting and made the game feel like a proper Mario game again. Maybe there's a bit of my anti-handheld bias sneaking in.
