I remember hearing about this back when it was in beta, but it must not have made much of an impact, because when I read the news about Valve's launch of the Steam Music Player this morning, I was kind of surprised.
It's not a separate piece of software. It uses the same Steam client and the Steam overlay, so you can browse your music collection without having to leave your games. I haven't tried it yet so I don't know what kind of organizational options are available.
To support the launch, Valve is offering a bunch of their soundtracks for free, and big discounts on games everyone almost certainly already owns.
