In a surprising turn of events, Nintendo updated Mario Kart 8 Deluxe today.

Patch notes:

Opponents’ names are displayed in the rear view mirror view in online matches.

Invincibility period after a spin-out or crash is longer in online matches.

Up to two players can spectate a friend group while they wait to join.

“Worldwide” and “Regional” modes add players to Mirror and 200cc matches less often.

Can now properly create a friend lobby when you have 100 or more friends.

Inkling Girl’s animation has been adjusted.

Starting positions in online races now properly reflect the order in which players join.

Driver Miis now properly showing facial expressions.

Tournament clock now properly reflects real-world time.

Stand out points for me: Ability to make an actual friend lobby, and the increased invincibility period after getting hit. I guess this will help to reduce item lag? Being able to spectate while joining a friends match is good as well, before it just wouldn't let you join if the room was full.

Anyone else playing the new tracks? I have found all of them enjoyable so. I still am overwhelmed by the Ninja course. I can’t figure a consistent path that feels comfortable.

I've played the new tracks once or twice. Paris was very interesting with the 3rd lap in reverse. The Ninja course didn't overwhelm me, but it's a good one. There seems to be a dangerous jump in the course (I didn't encounter) that can get you stuck. Don't know if it's already fixed.

Yeah overall enjoying the new courses, they are an unfortunate visual downgrade, but still nice to have new tracks. It very much feels like a "mushroom cup" of tracks though, very simple courses for the most part.

The Ninja one is crazy on 200cc, very difficult to stay in control, but it's a cool track. I find the most difficult part the high incline stairs near the beginning but I found out you can actually go around the stairs and it's a bit of an easier trek.

Any ideas when the next wave of courses will drop?
