These are both responsible for the popularization and refinement of excellent genres. Both have great music and aesthetics, too. If you don't count 30 years of WADs, Dark Souls has more meat on the bones, a great story, and hugely satisfying combat and exploration. I give it the edge out of these two.

Agreed, easy vote for the best 2D Final Fantasy. And not because SMW is overrated, because I don't think it is—I think it's a great overall game. But FF is just on another level.
