Clearly I need to play Guacamelee.

I think RDR is probably the peak of the GTA-style mission system game. It's just too good and too powerful.

RDR was incredible this coming from someone who hates GTA.

Mario Kart 8 I'm still playing and it's easily the best Mario kart I've played even my mum plays it who doesn't really play video games at all.

Red Dead is sweet. It`s basically a cowboy sim.

Given Pikmin more of a series vote than a single game vote.

Pikmin has been a real trooper in this competition. Still gets my vote above the others.

The Steam version of Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition has just gone on sale for $1.49 (in Canada—maybe cheaper in the US), which is 90% off the regular price. Perfect timing.

Anyone who's intrigued by the attention and support it's getting in this year's BGE owes it to themselves to pick this game up for pocket change and give it a try. It really is a wonderful refinement to the exploration-action-RPG formula established by the classic Metroid and Castlevania games. It uses the large, gradually-unlocked world via backtracking in an excellent way (it's never tiresome or obnoxious) and adds a dash of brilliant combat.

I think the big difference between Guacamelee and those two games is that Guacamelee is never vague as to where you're supposed to go, which would be the reason I like the game, while I can't stand metroidvania.

Red Dead Redemption surprised me when it hit. GTA formula with horses turned out to be very exciting. I will, however, reserve the right to never forgive them for not making a proper sequel using refined mechanics from Red Dead Revolver. The story wasn't shabby, and I spent more time being bait for ambushes with my friends in the free roam multiplayer than I would like to admit. An excellent game, all said, and I'm quite sad that I didn't think of offering this up in my initial list... or Samurai Western. This alone gets my vote, but I will try this Guaco game everyone is die harding about.

I was going to buy it and then cried when I found out that I have $1.44 on Steam instead of $1.49. I only buy games through prepaid cards on Steam (I don't trust making online transactions with credit cards) so that means in order to get the game I'd have to get at least a $20 steam card as I think that's the lowest denomination they sell at my local store.

I might go do it anyways though as that's a bargain basement price. I'll just have to find something else to purchase on Steam for ~$15.

edit-sold some trading cards to some suckers and got the 5 cents I needed. bought the game
