I think an argument could be made that Super Mario World is even better than 3.
Don't get me started on why I disagree with that assessment.

I'd like to get you started on that. :) That's what this is all about. :)

I like World better. Mario 3 had awesome level design though.

Fair enough. Figured this should be more SMB3 vs MM9, but whatever.

My biggest problem with SMW when compared to SMB3 is the lack of actual themes. There were only four or five real themes, recoloured throughout. A cave in the Valley of Bowser is no different than a cave in Vanilla Dome, thematically, as an example. The same cannot be said about SMB3. Every world felt wholly original. Sure, there's an occassional old theme in a later world here and there, but all in all, it felt much more diverse than SMW. I also like the variety of powerups in SMB3 over what Yoshi brought to the table.

In SMW's defense, though, I do love the way the world map was fully connected, and the use of alternate exits, secret stages, and map shortcuts.

I guess the difference comes from SMB 3 being set it different "worlds", while Mario World was set on one island, so aesthetically they tried to pull it all together. Even though sometimes the backgrounds were similar, I thought they did a good job of making the individual levels feel like they belonged where they did on the map. I think the background for world 2 and the little bridge between the cave world and forest world were the same, but in the latter they added many more hill sides and gaps to make it feel like you were higher up than you were in world 2.
