I thought it was not bad. I won't bash the 80's special effects because I'm sure they were good for the time. Once you've watched the movie for half an hour the red lasers don't look as bad anymore. They definitely did a good job with the droids and lightsabers (though the one lightsaber battle looked a little robotic to me).

The pacing was a little slow for me, but this is coming from someone who came right off of the Force Awakens, a movie with excellent pacing. They did a good job with the characters and back story, while the delivery of most of the lines came off as a little cheesy. It doesn't help that I already knew most of the story beats so that may be why it seemed a little slow to me.

Overall, not bad. 6/10. Will watch episodes V and VI.
Did you watch the original or the revised version?

My biggest problem with Ep.4 are still the horrendous dialogues and some hammy acting. The jump in quality between Ep.4 and 5 is stunning.

Everyone pokes fun at the dialogue for Star Wars. Sir Alec's reservations are probably the most famous, but I know Ford also complained to Lucas that none of the lines he gave him could be spoken aloud (part of the reason he ad-libbed so much). Hamill voices the same complaints in a much more diplomatic way. I actually think Hamill's development as an actor is pretty astounding to watch. You can tell he's a real cinephile, and his time as a fandom subject has given him a nuanced (dare I venture "wise") appreciation of the Star Wars universe that he wouldn't have had back in the '70s and '80s. This is part of the reason I'm excited to see what he can do in Episode VIII.

I'm pretty sure it was the original because Han shot first. Yeah, the acting was just funny really. I hear a lot of praise for Empire Strikes Back so I'm still looking forward to it.

That's hilarious what Alec said.

Alright, just finished The Empire Strikes Back.

Now that was a good movie. I really felt for the characters this time around. I liked the relationship between Han and Leia and how she has commitment issues and all Han wants is for Leia to say that she's actually interested in him. I've heard the famous "I love you - I know" thing before but now I see where it comes from. Leia finally admitting she has feelings for Han, and Han basically saying it's too late now.

The movie helped make Vader much more of an interesting villain. The dynamic between him and Luke is great. And in general the special effects were a little better and the dialogue was leaps and bounds better.

Oh man, not to mention: YODA!!! And "I am altering the deal." Great movie. I love that it ends with the Empire having the upper hand (and Luke having one fewer hand). Imagine seeing that in cinema and then having to wait three years before the next one to find out what happens!!!

By far Empire is still my favourite of the entire series. While Return Of The Jedi was not as good as Empire, it was still light years ahead of the prequel trilogy which was so incompetent that it made the cheesiness of A New Hope look quaint in comparison

Pretty much agree with your list except I'd switch Force Awakens and Empire as well as Menace and Clones.

The movie really had a unique feel from start to finish. From being thrown right into a new story and finishing with what was essentially a loss for the good guys. It was a really good story driven movie that didn't need one final explosion at the end to feel satisfying. Yeah it was a real cliffhanger, thankfully the wait for me was only a couple hours!

Star Wars Episode VI - Return of the Jedi. I will say, I love the title. I agree with you guys in that this one wasn't quite as good as Empire, but leagues ahead of A New Hope. It didn't quite have the energy and pacing as Empire, but still made for an interesting story with the force and Darth Vader. The beginning with Jabba felt like a bit of filler, but it was a good way to showcase how Luke has improved with the force and of course tie up the loose ends with Han from the last movie. I wasn't too into the furry bear things but they were cute. The battle between Luke and Vader was the best of the first three movies, felt like a high pace, high stakes battle. I liked seeing Darth Vader's face near the end and seeing how much the dark side had consumed him. After this movie though I hope episodes VII and IX have nothing to do with any Death Stars :p

7.5/10

I'm on to rewatch The Force Awakens tonight, now I can really see how it compares to the originals.
