You've got the paper ones and the doctor ones...you could make a case for 2d vs 3D...maybe even for side stuff he showed up in (I.e. Golf)
Did 3 or more mario sports game + the original mario sport game get nominated though? Same with the doctor one.

I wouldn't really call Smash a mario spinoff game. I'm actually quite shocked smash fans aren't up in arms about it not being included.
Mario & Luigi makes sense though as a legit spinoff.
Land is super similar to Super Mario Bros. that i'd just include it into the series and wouldn't call it a spinoff. Super Mario Bros./3D marios/Land to me are all mainstream same franchise games.
