Interesting. I, too, was one of the rare ones that never owned a PlayStation 2. If you're looking for an easy way to play some classics from Sony's past, I found a PS3 to be a great investment. I bought mine for $200 after the PS4 came out, and it has been a totally worthwhile purchase. With all the PS2 HD collections that were put out on it (not to mention PS2 ports sold digitally on the store), it's easy to catch up on some of the PS2's hits with the added polish of higher frame rates and more pixels. Additionally, for what it's worth, the PS3 also plays PS1 disks, which I find very convenient, as my PS1 lives in my parents' basement in Tennessee.

Don't know how keen you are on adding another console to your collection, but if you want a way to get to some of these great games you've missed, that's about the most cost-effective way, in my opinion.
You got BOOST power!

Of the top 8 I own and have played 7, beaten 4 (or 5 if you count Tetris). Of the complete list I've only played 50 of the games.

The only PS3 game in the top 100 is Valkyria Chronicles, also available on PS4.

There are five PS2 titles in the top 100: Shadow of the Colossus (available on PS3, coming to PS4), Ico (on PS3), Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (cheap on PS4), Final Fantasy X (on PS4), and Metal Gear Solid 2 (available on PS3).

Clay's recommendation is solid in general, though, mainly because a lot of the good old platformers got PS3 compilations that are great bang for the cheap buck. I haven't been trolling the used shops lately, but I imagine a slim PS3 could be found pretty affordably. I should have bought a new one before they stopped making them, just as a backup, since my active PS3 is still one of the old fat ones.

I have played 60 games on the Top 100 and beaten 36 of these where applicable if I didn't miscount. (37 if you count beating the first half of SotN, 44 if you further count the games that I don't consider beatable. I left off a couple of games that I beat through wholesale cheating, though there are a number of games that I beat using savestates that I counted.) Most of the games I haven't played are post-SNES Nintendo games and/or games from the 21st century, unsurprisingly. The highest-ranking game I've played but not beaten is #2, and the highest-ranking game I haven't played is #6.

I thought I'd break down my to-do list. I've got three breakdowns here. Games I own or have access to that I intend to beat someday, games I don't intend to beat, and games that I haven't beaten yet don't have access to (mostly Ninty stuff). Also threw in a what have I beaten list. I left Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in both my 'to beat' list and in my 'beaten' list because I want to replay it to complete it. So it is a to-do item even though I saw credits.

*fist bump*

I've played it a bunch, especially in college, but I've never gone through from start to finish on my own file. I should set up my N64 sometime and just have a "Month of N64!" completion & beation party.
