Re: BGE Questions & General Discussion

Post by Kong Wen »

Prompted by Niahak's post in the Objections! thread about the paucity of RPGs and series-persistence in the higher ranks of this contest, I pulled some comparisons on the previous Top 32 brackets:

Games that have been in the Top 32 in all three "BGE!!!" Projects:

Final Fantasy VI
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Super Mario World
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Galaxy
Portal
Super Metroid
Super Mario Bros.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Tetris
Super Mario 64
Mega Man 2
Metal Gear Solid

Games that have been in the Top 32 twice:
Red text = missed the Top 32 for the first time in 2015

Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Final Fantasy IV
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Pokémon [Blue/Red] Version
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Metroid Prime
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Mega Man 9
Batman: Arkham Asylum

Games that are in the Top 32 for the first time:
[Previous peak rank in brackets]

Team Fortress 2 [58]
Super Meat Boy [101]
Red Dead Redemption [38]
Mega Man X [38]
Banjo-Kazooie [57]
Pikmin [122]
Doom II: Hell on Earth [45]
The Legend of Zelda [37]
Doom [33]
R-Type [259]
XCOM: Enemy Unknown/Within [185]
Castlevania [43]
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening [43]

Where did FF IV finish this year? I don't remember seeing it in the top 64 or possibly even the 128

Yeah, those are pretty disappointing (although the Suikodens had a pretty good run - I think they were more competitive than previous years). I've only even played about half of the games that are new to the top 32.

It was in the Top 128. I don't have an exact rank worked out for it yet (it'll take some maths).

Suikoden certainly did. It finished #147 in 2010 and #214 in 2012, but cracked the Top 128 in this year's contest.

Suikoden II seeded deep and then was immediately eliminated as it debuted, which I wouldn't characterize as a run of any kind. Nice to see it get initial support on the nomination end, though.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm finding the Round of Pools to be a quite effective way of seeding the tournament, much moreso than number of nominations / nomination priority!

The Admin has sorted the results-so-far in the main spreadsheet / master list (link in the nomination thread) and it's a pretty solid list of games floating to the top. It'll be interesting to see how it looks when we get through a few hundred more games!
