Bottom 1024 — Week 19 — Poll 20

Post by This Old Neon »

Welcome to the #BGE2020 Elimination Round Lower Bracket!

Each game in the lower bracket is still seeded based on its performance in the two opening rounds of pools! Every game in the lower bracket has already been defeated by another game in a 1-on-1 poll to get to this point. This is their chance to claw their way back into the main event... but the stakes are high. The games that lose in these polls are out of the tournament for good! The games that survive will face the next crop of upper bracket losers in the next round.

Polls are updated weekly, typically on Saturday... or Sunday or Monday. Check back throughout the week to make sure you don't miss a vote!

HOW TO VOTE

This is easy. You only get one vote per poll. The game with the most votes wins. In the event of a tie, the higher seed advances, so don't get complacent!

Mirrors Edge is phenomenal and really deserves to be in the top 512.

Out of curiosity what knocked it out?

It was demoted by Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty / Dune II: Battle for Arrakis (1992, PC), which will make its appearance in the next set of upper-bracket polls in two weeks.

Damn how did that beat Mirrors Edge? I've never even heard of it.

It was the first true RTS, and the predecessor to Command & Conquer.

I appreciate this context, as I didn't know that either. I may need to try to find a way to play it!

Anyway, notwithstanding my lack of knowledge there, I abstained the last time Mirror's Edge was up for a vote and am abstaining this time because I think it's just okay. It would have to go up against something truly bad at this point to get me to vote for it, and we're probably at the point now where that won't happen.

That's really cool. Sounds like it really paved the way for genre.

Aye, in the earlier rounds some of us may have chimed in with that context, but the context to the context is those earlier rounds were like 2-3 years ago now lmao!

Dune II and the earlier-but-not-as-influential Herzog Zwei (the game which probably prompted Pluvius to include "true" in his description above, because while it was an RTS, it didn't have many of the genre-defining staple mechanics/features) definitely helped create what would become an immensely popular genre. Not just as under-the-radar influences, either—devs of those other big names in the genre have cited them directly as influences. The first games in the Command & Conquer, Warcraft, and Age of Empires series would come out a couple years later.
