Bottom 1024 — Week 22 — Poll 32

Post by This Old Neon »

Welcome to the #BGE2020 Elimination Round Lower Bracket!

Each game in the lower bracket is still seeded based on its performance in the two opening rounds of pools! Every game in the lower bracket has already been defeated by another game in a 1-on-1 poll to get to this point. This is their chance to claw their way back into the main event... but the stakes are high. The games that lose in these polls are out of the tournament for good! The games that survive will face the next crop of upper bracket losers in the next round.

Polls are updated weekly, typically on Saturday... or Sunday or Monday. Check back throughout the week to make sure you don't miss a vote!

HOW TO VOTE

This is easy. You only get one vote per poll. The game with the most votes wins. In the event of a tie, the higher seed advances, so don't get complacent!

I like Robotrek a lot. It's one of those games I started dozens of times but have only beaten once (the robot programming sounds more interesting than it is). Its translation is pretty dry for the content so its jokes come off as accidental frequently. (It's definitely another entry in that "mediocre SNES RPGs" list).

If it had introduced more programming variety earlier, or the crafting/leveling system were better it could 100% have been a classic, it had some really cool ideas that just didn't pan out well.

Not really a fair contest up against Nier - while I wouldn't say I had that much fun actually playing it, it gave me a lot to think about and was well worth experiencing once for the sheer variety of oddity and subgenres involved (and the music, fascinating how that was put together). I've got a copy of Automata I never played, but I doubt it will hit the same after playing Nier.

That said I'm not sure I can stab Robotrek in the back like this. I'll have to think about it.

I keep waffling between both of these games too. Robotrek has some nostalgia value for me and it's super cute, but it definitely didn't reach SNES RPG Classic status for a reason. By contrast, Nier is a really interesting and original game that got overlooked for one reason or another—timing, oddness, whatever—but I think it's ultimately the better game. I think it deserves my vote here.

Did Automata's release lead to more people going back and discovering Nier?

I'm pretty sure Automata's release (and success) led to the Nier 1.2247... etc remaster's release in 2021, which based of a quick lookup sold better than the original.
