Top 512 — Week 6 — Poll 16

Post by This Old Neon »

Welcome to the #BGE2020 Elimination Round of 512!

Each game is seeded based on its performance in the two opening rounds of pools. Every game in the Upper Bracket has defeated multiple other games in 1-on-1 polls to get to this point. These are still the best of the best.

Polls are updated weekly, typically on Sunday or Monday. Check back throughout the week to make sure you don't miss a vote!

HOW TO VOTE

This is easy. You only get one vote per poll. The game with the most votes wins. In the event of a tie, the higher seed advances, so don't get complacent!

The earlier entries in the New Super Mario Bros. spinoff series are rough. Zelda II is rough too, but it's rough in an interesting way—they somehow managed to join the Legend of Zelda with a style of side-scrolling Metrovania-lite action/exploration in a compelling way. Nintendo did some interesting stuff with their sequels back in the day before they learned they could just keep making the same game again. :D

Anyway, Zelda II also features one of the best NPCs in the series (Error).

New Super Mario Bros. is not a bad game, but it never really grabbed me the way the 3D Mario games (bar Sunshine) always have. Zelda II is an odd game but it is really interesting and rather daring in the things it tries. It's also kind of a pain in the ass, but it gets my vote here.

Off topic but why did Sunshine not grab you? Do you know? It’s probably my favorite 3D Mario of those I’ve played….so that’s why I ask.
I never thought I would feel this way, but now I know. Now I know. I never thought I would see things as I see them now, but now I know. I never thought I would hurt so bad, but now I know. Now I know.

I remember enjoying the world and environment a lot, but I found the controls to be really unwieldy - trying to manipulate both vertical and horizontal movement with the water jetpack always felt awkward. I also haven't played it in probably 15 years, though, and my Gamecube is still hooked up so maybe I'll return to it and try again.
