Bottom 1024 — Week 30 — Poll 23

Post by This Old Neon »

Welcome to the #BGE2020 Elimination Round Lower Bracket!

Each game in the lower bracket is still seeded based on its performance in the two opening rounds of pools! Every game in the lower bracket has already been defeated by another game in a 1-on-1 poll to get to this point. This is their chance to claw their way back into the main event... but the stakes are high. The games that lose in these polls are out of the tournament for good! The games that survive will face the next crop of upper bracket losers in the next round.

Polls are updated weekly, typically on Saturday... or Sunday or Monday. Check back throughout the week to make sure you don't miss a vote!

HOW TO VOTE

This is easy. You only get one vote per poll. The game with the most votes wins. In the event of a tie, the higher seed advances, so don't get complacent!

7th Saga is solidly in the "subpar SNES RPGs I like for little good reason" tier - it might even be the founder of the tier in my mind (it's either this or Arcana). It's a fun game to play for around 3 hours, as long as you don't mind grinding a bit. By the end of the first "world" things are absolutely brutal, especially if you haven't managed to recruit a partner (which itself can be anything from "talk to them in town and they just join you" to "beat an opponent much harder than you by getting lucky").

Interesting stuff it does:
-7 distinct starting characters with implied friendliness towards each other
-runes give you helpful abilities in combat (e.g. reusable healing item)
-slightly randomized scenarios (e.g. a rune is stolen before you get to it, by a random character)
-bleak world with music to match, tragic tetujin backstory - not often you can play as a 2000 year old robot with amnesia
-likely unintentionally, leveling increases your stats less in the western release. other heroes level as normal unless they're in your party, which is one reason why duels are so brutal (the JPN release / fanpatch is STILL grindy, though)

Snake Rattle 'n Roll isn't bad, but it is pretty tough. I'd give the edge to 7th saga here because nostalgia / more interesting game.
