Never played through the original Kid Icarus, only dabbled previously. It's decent! Great selection of music that really holds the game up. With save states I found it to be very bearable. I like the slow progression of your items and strength. By the end you feel pretty strong!

Been a number of years since I've played the minish cap, nice to get back to it. It's a neat little melding of ALTTP and WW in terms of designs, but still manages to have an identity of its own. I will say I ram into a lot more roadblocks this time around than I remember! Just little things like having to talk to a specific person to open up an area that's not super clear. Different from the modern games that typically have everything open from the start with multiple solutions.

Also played through the 3D version of Sonic 2 on 3DS - the 3D visuals add a lot and this version of the game really looks and feels great. Never finished Sonic 2 before so it was nice to play through it.

07/15 - Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore (PS5)
07/17 - Mr. Run and Jump (2600)
07/23 - Wanted (SMS)

Finally finished the enormous and pretty good Rebirth and a small flurry of other great shorter titles. My most recent three in particular were real bangers. Arzette is a perfectly-executed tribute to the Zelda CD-i games that actually makes those concepts fun. Mr. Run and Jump is a 2023 officially published homebrew platformer for the 2600 with strong VVVVVV vibes. Wanted is a cute Old West light gun game that's a blast to play through and marks, at long last, the first Master System game I've beaten on original hardware. You just can't go wrong with a good light gun romp, but I think Wanted genuinely rivals anything the Zapper supported. Lots of fun.

Until next time. :belmont:

Man, I love those 3D ports. They look so nice, and M2 does a great job with emulation and accessibility options. Sonic 2 also happens to be by far my favorite Sonic game by far, so on a personal level, I'm glad to see you finally checked that one off. :)

I kinda told myself I'd take a little break from games after Rebirth but that doesn't seem to be happening! I instead seem to have just moved to shorter games. Oh well! The break will come sometime, I suppose. :)

Enjoyable, unplanned pairing of highly influential Final games. Enjoyed 'em both a lot!

I found one typo!

"You can use any combination of the game’s four classes,"

This should be six classes.

(As you will later discover for yourself, the series calls them "jobs" :D)

I agree with you that the systematic wandering through dungeons in order to map them (and incidentally gain some levels along the way) is part of the experience and also that you're not missing much. :D That's one of those things you mentioned that's inherited from earlier RPGs: going into a big dungeon blind, and having to figure out where to go, drawing a map, bailing when your resources get too low, then coming back and continuing the search where you left off. In fact, this used to be one of the main features/attractions of early RPGs! :D

Re: the typo, good catch. :) Of course, I meant that you have a 4-man party composed of any mix of the six options. Will fix when I get home. And yeah, I'm aware of jobs but don't think I saw them referred to as such in FF1? Anyway, classes is communicative to people who haven't played FF. :)

But yeah, I think it's totally appropriate for them to have left the dungeons the way they were for those wanting that classic experience, but I sure didn't mind the more streamlined option. Even as someone who tries to keep an open mind to older design philosophies, I think I'm glad we've trended away from that sort of thing. :)

I will say the auto-mapper option from the Switch version of Phantasy Star was an awesome option and a pretty good compromise between the old way and just giving you the map straight up like FFPR did.

Aye, you're not missing much, unless you went into the game specifically hoping for that kind of thing. Or at least expecting it (it would have been in the back of everyone's mind in the '80s). As someone who has walked those dungeons' floors many times, I certainly appreciated being able to open the map and go "exit bottom left" or "no chests in here" lol

In the interests of keeping this discussion on the topic of beating games, I of course also beat FFPR last week, on stream, whilst autobattling :D Here's a playlist for anyone interested:
