Could we have a Best Gen 7 Game Ever Project?

Post by SkyPikachu »

Move this if need be

I'm happy to run it unless Kong Wen you want to and of course we get enough interest.

I was thinking everyone gets to pick up to 5 games from each Gen 7 console. (XB360, PS3, Wii, PC, 3DS, PSP, Phone/Other) So a total of a maximum of 35 picks.

It would then run similar to how the BGE Project runs with games getting ranked then battled against in groups of around 5 then battled head to head until we get the best Gen 7 game.

Would anyone be interested in this?

I'm also happy to hear any ideas.

1. Nomination - Everyone nominates up to 5 games from each console then the top 128 (or 64 depending on numbers) get ranked
1b. Nomination fine tuning - We'd vote against any ties between the last placed games so we have 128 games left.
2. Bracket Round - We'd have 16 brackets of 8 games where 4 games in each bracket would go through
3. Final 32 - We'd have 8 brackets of 4 games where 2 games in each bracket would go through.
4. Final 16 - Head to Head 8 brackets of 2 games where only 1 gets through
5. Final 8 - Exactly the same as Final 16 just 4 brackets
6. Semi Finals - 2 brackets of 2 games
7. Finals - Best 2 games battle it out.

Slurm, we won't be doing anything like this in this coming year (because it's an official BGE year), but we can certainly look at 7th generation games as part of a side-event (like we've done in the past). We can pull them out of the main BGE spreadsheet relatively easily.

I've added a 7th Generation filter to the BGE database to make it easy to track those games during the main event this year. During the 2012-13 event, 24 of the top 100 games (final rankings) were from the 7th Gen (defined as DS, PS3, PSP, Wii, X360—PC, mobile, and arcade platforms weren't included, but they could be). A handful are remakes and thus may not even be considered qualified.

Batman: Arkham Asylum
Braid
Chrono Trigger DS - enhanced port from SNES
Dark Souls
Demon's Souls
Half-Life 2 - port from PC
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Mega Man 9
Metroid Prime - enhanced port from GCN
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Ōkami - enhanced port from PS2
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
The Pinball Arcade
Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver Versions - remake from GBC
Portal
Portal 2
Rayman Origins
Red Dead Redemption
Resident Evil 4 - enhanced port from PS2
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Xenoblade Chronicles

Half Life 2 and Twilight Princess are kinda Gen 6.

Yeah, I missed those ones, so I'll make a note of that. They were on the list because of the Wii port and X360/PS3 Orange Box ports respectively.

EDIT: Actually, the Wii version of Twilight Princess came out before the GCN one. I think it's a safe but very early 7th gen game. (Cross-gen / transitionary.)

Geeze, that list sure emphasizes that I have different taste from most people here. That last gen list aside from the Souls games makes last gen look skippable. At least there's not 100 Assassin's Creed games on there.

But wasn't the Wii version mirrored? Aka TP was based for the GCN? Like it doesn't really matter but I always see it as a GCN game.

I rather have a "BGE", in terms of video game music [arrangement]. (It's OCR's 15th anniversary this year).

How do you know the Gamecube version wasn't mirrored? ;) I know I know Link's right hand.

I guess it depends how you classify games. Would you consider Assasians Creed IV and Watchdogs gen 7 or 8? Both came out on last gen and current gen consoles.
