Warsong is an easy vote for me here.

It very, very nearly made it into my own list of nominations. It's a strategy masterpiece, with all the hallmarks I love in the genre: large-scale hectic battles, promotion trees, permanent death, hiring smaller "troop" units, etc. It also has a large variety of strategic scenarios, from traversing perilous terrain, to defending important positions, to escaping!!, to large all-out wars.

I absolutely had to give Shadow over Mystara some lovin'. Metal Slug is an obvious choice as well, and Warsong was excellent.

Easy votes for me. Yars' was among the best 2600 games, Mystara was responsible for nearly bankrupting myself and three of my best friends, and Metal Slug revitalized the arcade run 'n gun in spectacular fashion. Those sprites still hold up today.

It shouldn't be. Warsong is an amazing game. I think it's not winning only because of not enough folks having played it.
