BGE Top 128 Introduction & Discussion

Post by This Old Neon »

The Top 128 Brackets of the 2015 "BEST GAME EVER!!!" Project are about to begin.

The Top 128 marks the true beginning of the main event! Every game in here is a giant among giants, either because it has risen through the ranks and proven itself against other games, or because of the weight of the nominations it received. Lots of people love these games, or else a few people love them enough to rank them among a small handful of favourites.
  • There will be 16 brackets of 8 games each.
  • Brackets are seeded by nomination weight and rank coming out of the qualifying rounds (it's no longer random).
  • You will be able to vote for up to 4 games in each poll.
  • The top 4 games from each bracket will advance to the Top 64.
The Top 128 brackets and above are merciless. Great games will be ranked against each other. Games from the same series will run into each other. You won't be able to save everyone.

Brackets will be open for one week.

Every game ranked from 40th-49th is currently not in the top 4 of their polls.

All of them are losing by at least 3 votes as well. (and six of them by 5 or more)

That's just crazy.

40 Gears of War (Down by 5)
41 Crimzon Clover: World Ignition (Down by 4)
42 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (Down by 4)
43 Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (Down by 8)
44 Sleeping Dogs (Down by 6)
45 Path of Exile (Down by 10)
46 Final Fantasy VII (Down by 3)
47 Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (Down by 3)
48 The Last of Us (Down by 5)
49 Wario Land II (Down by 5)

The stats might have changed a little from when I acquired the data 6~ hours ago.

Final Fantasy VII has 5 votes
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons has 4 votes.

The rest have 0-2 votes.

Every other group of 10 has at least 2 games in the top 4.

Such a weird stat especially for them being in the top half of the 128.

Based on the games on that list, the discrepancy looks like a function of relatively few people nominating those games with high weight, and then only those few people voting for them while more people vote for other games.

Bit of a shame really. There were games 3 rounds ago that didn't make it through that were better.

Welcome to BGE!

Rest in peace Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Shinobi (PS2), Dead Space 3, Dragon Quest VIII, and Berzerk (if the latter isn't eliminated yet it will be soon...I forget but do accept reality)
I never thought I would feel this way, but now I know. Now I know. I never thought I would see things as I see them now, but now I know. I never thought I would hurt so bad, but now I know. Now I know.

Sengoku Rance is the greatest RPG of all time and the only reason it isn't doing well is because hardly anybody has played it.

I gotta admit that a lot of other games probably deserved to advance but didn't because people (including myself) didn't play them as well, though. I hope to give Castlevania Aria of Sorrow a try at some point as it definitely looks like an awesome one that I missed out on.

What happens if there's a tie in the tiebreaker? Does the higher ranked game get through?

In one case all games were eliminated, in another case where 2 out of 3 games were tied, a tie breaking tie breaker was made to settle the score.

We can't just wipe all games in the Top 128 or there won't be enough games in the brackets.

We could extend the tie-breaker until someone breaks it, but that's boring. It's more likely that we'd just take the highest-seeded game.
