Now I guess I should get around to beating either of them...
Gate is a relatively easy game as shooters go, and it is excellent. Get on that, it's totally worth the effort.

It's okay but Gate of Thunder is a far better game.

I'm pleasantly surprised by all of the Gate of Thunder love, didn't really get into shmups until I played this one. Contra III was good, Sim City 2000 is one of my go-to time waster games, and Quake III made homeroom fly by.

I felt Dragon Quest VI was the weakest of the Zenithian trilogy but i was still a pretty damn good game, just not as good as 4 & 5. Finally got around to Astro Boy this year and it did not disappoint, game play was super tight and responsive and it was fun guessing which Tezuka character would show up next.

One thing that VI did really well that IV and V struggled with, in my opinion, is not holding the player's hand. IV and V had good stories and worlds and gameplay, but it was usually spelled out for you what to do next and where to go next. VI gave you a huge world, a handful of cryptic, vague hints, and forced you to figure it out by exploring and by trying different things. Or to bail on it entirely. This is the same reason I prefer the first trilogy to the Zenithian one. I like being lost.
I’ve been waiting for the sun to come up. Waiting for the showers to stop. Waiting for the penny to drop. One time. And I’ve been standing in a cloud of plans. Standing on the shifting sands. Hoping for an open hand. One time.

I'm not a fan of SimCity 2000's implicit supply-side politics, but it is a massively-entertaining government simulator. Wasted so many hours on that game, and had some real fun designing (and destroying!) thriving metropoleis.

Gate of Thunder, Contra III, and Astro Boy will barely scrape into the next round.
