I don't think Dynasty Warriors gets enough credit for this. DW3 is certainly the first game in the series where it was a completely viable feature. The fact that you and your teammate could split up and tackle these huge maps completely separately was thrilling at the time. I remember being in a big brawl with a couple of generals and calling out to my brother that I'd probably be in trouble. He had to rush across the map—which took a couple minutes!—and I had to hold out long enough for him to get there. All of a sudden, he comes rushing in on his horse and peons are flying everywhere!!! What a rush.

And those damned archers...

The series is so great for co-op. I spent many an evening in college playing drop-in co-op DW with all kinds of people in the dorm's common room. Combine that with the huge variety of scenarios and the action-RPGness of the upgrade system and you had a great game with staying power.

Sun Quan especially with those damned crossbows... taking off a quarter of your health with each shot in the harder stages. It was worth it to play Wu just to not have to deal with them.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is probably the best Sonic game. Improved on the original in every way with better music, more stages and more variety.
