Good criticisms, Kiwi! The perks themselves are more of less "get better at this thing." The true meat of the character growth is in the actual skills/spells you get.

The backtracking through empty hallways after killing monsters is only ever really a thing on the same floor, so you're only looking at 10-15 seconds of boredom, unless you forget how to get around. You don't need to backtrack all the way through early zones again unless you're going for 100% completion.
