Wow that is a long time!
I haven't watched the finale yet, don't think I will. My girlfriend has already seen it so I'm not very motivated to sit down for an hour and a half to finish this up

If you watch 8 seconds per day, you'll finish the episode just in time for the launch of the 8th season.

That might be the best way to do it!

HBO has confirmed that Game of Thrones will conclude with a 6-episode season 8 beginning (and ending) in 2019.
During my wait for season 7, I re-watched the entire series with my brother-in-law (his first time).
The wait for season 8 will be long enough for me to re-read the first book and then proceed to read the rest of the series. That's the plan, anyway.

And the same question remains from 2011; will GRRM finish The Winds of Winter before the next season?

Same answer, too.

I just don’t understand why it’s taking so much longer to produce 40% less episodes.

Probably a combination of waiting for the correct weather again (like the delay last season, because they were waiting for snowy grey skies), increased CGI work required, and conflicting schedules between the many now-famous stars.

Also like this last season I'm sure a few of those episodes will go much beyond the typical 50 minute run time.
I'm thinking increased CGI is a big one too, this one's going to be all battles.
