I'm pretty excited about this expansion, because it deals with two of the groups that I'm really interested in but who've been shrouded in mystery for the most part: the Awoken of the Reef (rumour has it we'll get a new social space there), and the Fallen. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on some Fallen gear, because they look great.

The next expansion is "The Taken King", and it's coming 15 September. It'll have more content (specifics probably to be revealed today) as well as a new subclass for each class: Thor's flaming hammer for Titans, a Void bow for Hunters, and Sith lightning for Warlocks. Looks badass.
Ghost has been recast (Nolan North). Existing lines are also being re-recorded.
Level cap bumped to 40 from 34.
Existing weapons and equipment will slowly become obsolete, so players will have to dismantle them in favour of new gear.
Lots more story, cut-scenes (skippable this time) and characterization.
More stuff being teased in this trailer (stuff they're going to talk about on Twitch tomorrow):
I'm particularly excited about the promise of emblem/shader collections, more vaults, and piqued about whatever that exotic blueprint screen is meant to be for. If it's a way to de-clutter gear by being able to access your exotic weapons without having to keep them stored somewhere, that would be great.
Bonus: Nathan Fillion

OK, the 2.0 patch has dropped. Rad, if you're planning on buying digitally, this is the time. The whole infrastructure of the game has been updated to year 2 (GUI, level structure, quests, menus, new visual and audio assets, etc.). Only the content (missions and new gear) is left for next week.
The updates will take some time to digest, but they're really quite comprehensive. Significant quality of life improvements. I didn't think it would be possible, but the game feels crisper and tighter now (and it was pretty perfect before).
We're spending some time playing the new Crucible modes this week in advance of all the story missions opening up on Tuesday.

Nah, not really. What they're doing with gear kind of mirrors MMO gear cycles. Gjallarhorn will still be effective enough against enemies up to a certain level, in Solar burns, and in the Crucible where power/level doesn't matter. But they're phasing new gear in that's better than all of the year 1 stuff, so there will be rocket launchers that have more attack power.
That is, until they introduce the year 2 version of the Gjallarhorn. There are year 2 / upgrade versions of each exotic weapon & armour. Some of them are in the game at launch, and some will be trickled in as the year goes on.
For example, I forget what other exotics you have, but the SUROS has a year 2 version as of next week. I think you can just spend legendary marks and glimmer to acquire it right away as long as you already own the original one.
