We could always host the polling on This Old Neon's main site, whether we use the site's onboard polling add-on, Google Forms, or something else. At least that way people are engaging with the site, even if they're not on the forums.

That would work as I assume the idea is to bring new people to the website/forum by doing the BGE.

This is what I'm seeing from contributions here so far:

Phase One:
  • Each user supplies a poll/contest topic idea (to pull one example mentioned in this thread already: "Best Soundtrack")
  • These can be sent to me via PM to keep them secret and surprising
Phase Two:
  • Reveal the user-submitted polls
  • Open nominations for user-submitted polls and the main BGE!!!
  • 10 nominations each?
  • Or a weighted system like we used last time, where you can nominate however many you want and their value changes accordingly?
  • Host a Google Form on TONe to solicit nominations for all categories from non-members
  • Members get a nomination bonus/perk?
Phase Three:
  • Preliminary rounds for user-submitted polls
  • Main event preliminary rounds sorted by console/series/developer/etc?
I welcome feedback, especially on the parts in orange. We can progress with nominations as soon as we have this nailed down.

Will you include a small editorial column on the site to promote this?

All the polls are going to be on the site. Promoting the site with the site won't have much value so it'll be up to members to share it with their social circles.

+1 for Weighted. Limiting to 10 may mean we only get 60 games nominated (Eg. 10 people nominate meaning max 100 games and we're likely to get 40% overlap or some people may not vote 10)

Any feedback other than Slurm?

I don't have much of an opinion between nomination options. When we did the weighted system I didn't feel like there was ultimately much difference in how the polls played out so I'm good with whatever the majority prefers here. As I see it, the two choices presented each have their own main draw:

- a strictly limited number of picks can be really fun. The
nomination process is as fun as the contest, so while it can be
painful to chop favourites, it does make for a more considered
approach and gets you really thinking hard about your gaming
life from front to back.

- the weighted system, simply, gives each participant the option
of how they want to approach the nomination phase. Hard to
argue with that.

Member perks, ehh, I dunno. I dunno how I feel about that. There are a bunch of points to make for having a member perks bonus, but I kind of find the idea antithetical to the spirit of the BGE.

[EDIT] Side note regarding the off-site doc for submitting nominations... why not make that the standard for all of us? We'll of course still be in the threads discussing things. Just seems like an easy way to keep the data consolidated right away.

Unless the spirit of the BGE is getting people to engage on TONe instead of just popping some titles into a form on the site and bouncing.

Maybe limit the perks to the earlier rounds that or only let members get to nominate side contests.
