Rolling Stone revealed some new details about the upcoming Pink Floyd album—their first in 20 years, and what will be their final studio album—The Endless River. The title, like many of the tracks, is a callback to their last album, The Division Bell.

Nick Mason and David Gilmour were going through hours of unreleased material from the sessions they were recording for the Division Bell and an unreleased simultaneous side-project, and they found a lot of material that they wanted to revisit, inspired by Rick Wright's masterful and unique style. They've added parts to some tracks, re-recorded others, and compiled and created enough new material to create a 4-side album dedicated to Wright's memory and his impact on the sound & style of Pink Floyd.

I think this sounds awesome, because my first concern when this album was rumoured was that it wouldn't sound like Pink Floyd without Rick Wright. But now that I know he'll be playing on this album, I actually have high hopes for it. I also really like the idea of Pink Floyd doing a mostly-instrumental album, because I hope this will bring out the intensely creative and experimental side of them that made them so amazing in the early '70s.

I'll be checking this out if only for the rare opportunity to hear Wright one more time. The inspiration and source material do sound promising, but I'll very specifically refrain from getting my hopes too high.

I'm leaning toward passing on this though its being predominantly instrumental does admittedly tempt me to change my mind. I've liked everything they've done to varying degrees - I think even their bad albums are pretty good. But I'm also at peace with what I know about them and truly satisfied with what I know. It may be better for me to leave that last page unread as I think there's more risk of my satisfaction diminishing than of it improving.

I'm an odd duck but y'all already know that.

Spotify just launched in Canada. Does anyone here use it? Recommended?

Heard of the rapper Kool A.D. ? Neither did I, until the other day. I've gotten really into his understated style of rapping. His album wasn't available on Spotify or from illegal means.. So I actually spent $1 on it on Bandcamp, which is my first album purchase since I bought Linkin Parks Meteora in Greece, some 10 years ago...

Why didn't you post the bandcamp link instead of youtube so that people could not only listen to the album for free, but also download it (for free and legally) or even better, buy it?

I'm not listening to this yet, but it's on the way and I plan to spend lots of quality time with it starting next week.

I was browsing Amazon this morning and I found something that I didn't even know had been released (earlier this year), John Mayall's Bluesbreakers Live in '67. This is the lineup featuring Peter Green, so if you know me at all you know why I immediately jumped at this purchase. This is an archival recording, so the sound quality isn't going to be great, but the opportunity to hear Peter Green in his prime ripping it up on Mayall standards in a live club can't be missed.



It's worth noting that this is basically Fleetwood Mac, except with John Mayall on Hammond instead of Jeremy Spencer on an additional guitar. Depending on how "at the helm" Mayall is on this recording, I'm considering it a pre-Fleetwood Mac (1968) Fleetwood Mac album. The reason this is exciting is because Fleetwood wasn't on A Hard Road, which was Green's studio album with the Bluesbreakers. Green's playing on that album is great, so I have high hopes for this.

Whether Mayall is at the helm or not (and I suspect he is), there is zero chance that won't be a special album. Also, archival recording doesn't necessarily preclude good sound. Cowboy Junkies' debut album was recorded live in a garage with a single omni-directional mic and the sound quality is unbelievable.

As with any Bluesbreakers, Mayall is definitely at the helm. It's just a question of how much. He also likes to let his featured guys do their thing from time to time, so if he's happy to let Green rip (e.g. "The Supernatural") and sing a few tracks, I'll be a happy man.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Jake Bugg. His voice is a little country, and his sound is a little more rock. His first self titled album has more of an acoustic sound to it, with a couple sounds reminising The Beatles. His second album, Shangri La, has much more of a rock vibe to it, really catchy.
