I've watched my fifth film of the year:
The Dig (2021) — 6.5/10
2021-02-06: Mrs. Kong started watching this in the living room while I was doing BGE updates, so I stopped to join her, because it was interesting enough. It's about the big Sutton Hoo find, which of course you know about if you've ever studied Old English or Beowulf or something like that. This film is a nice attempt to bring an unsung hero back into the spotlight, and the acting is excellent, though the plot is a little bare and predictable.

Re: Last movie you watched & your rating
I've watched my sixth film of the year:
Red Dot (2021) — 2.0/10
2021-02-27: My brother recommended this movie because he's obsessed with revenge thrillers, and good ones can be good, but... this one wasn't. I found it super predictable and poorly-structured. Good revenge is from the protagonists' point of view so you can follow the plans as they unwind, instead of having them all exposited to you in a flashback right at the end. So this wasn't really a satisfying revenge plot, but an afterthought justification for the antagonist's motivations.

Re: Last movie you watched & your rating
I've watched my seventh film of the year:
La Bamba (1987) — 7.9/10
2021-03-12: Mrs. Kong was up late finishing up some OT before we go on vacation next week, so we were browsing Netflix for something to throw on in the background. I remember seeing La Bamba as a little kid back in the day (re-watching it now, there was a LOT in this movie that I clearly never caught onto as a kid), but she had never seen it before, so we put it on. Some great tunes. Loses a few points for having a kind of coasting plot and everyone knowing what the finale is going to look like...

Re: Last movie you watched & your rating
I've watched my eighth film of the year:
Zach Snyder's Justice League (2021) — 6.9/10
2021-03-27: My brother watched this last week and was so enamoured with it that he insisted on coming over to watch it at my cinema. I saw the original and I thought it was fine, fine. Not good, but it had its entertaining elements. This version certainly improved on a lot of things, but it was also way too long and had a completely unnecessary, bizarre tacked-on ending that almost single-handedly made the rest of the improvements to the film not worth it. Left a bad taste in the ol' mouth. Utter shite.

Re: Last movie you watched & your rating
Wait, I forgot about my actual eighth film of the year!
It was some utter tripe thriller on Netflix that was anything but thrilling.
Deadly Illusions (2021) — 2.0/10
2021-03-21: Mrs. Kong started watching this one because she was in the mood for some schlocky thriller/horror nonsense with low viewing effort and... at least this directionless mess full of false starts and predictable twists and unresolved plot-lines was low-effort. What a terrible movie. It stars Charlotte off Sex and the City and Kelsey Grammer's daughter, and legitimately the only reason this film gets any points at all is because of a scene with Grammer in a tight bathing suit. Sorry not sorry.

Re: Last movie you watched & your rating
I've watched my tenth film of the year:
Sicario (2015) — 9.0/10
2021-04-10: I don't know why I suddenly got it in my head to watch this again—I first saw it back when it came out, when I was unfamiliar with Denis Villeneuve's work—but I convinced Mrs. Kong to watch it with me and it was even better than I remembered. I think I "got it" more this time, and I was also able to retroactively recognize some classic Villeneuve shots, having now seen and thoroughly enjoyed more of his stuff.

2021-04-10: 9.0/10 Sicario (2015)
Geez, somehow this is the second-oldest movie I've watched this year.

Re: Last movie you watched & your rating
I've watched my eleventh and twelfth films of the year:
Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal (2021) — 6.0/10
2021-04-16: This was on Netflix. I remember some stuff about it. It's funny for me because I work in college admissions and... this was completely unrecognizable. Just a roiling tempest of shitty people.
Green Book (2018) — 8.1/10
2021-04-19: Not too bad, taken on its own merits, decontextualized from its Oscar win and the films it was up against. It definitely has its flaws, but it was cute—much cuter than I thought it would be. I suppose that's one of its flaws as well. I think my biggest problem is with the writing. The performances were excellent.

Re: Last movie you watched & your rating
I've watched my fourteenth film of the year:
Nightcrawler (2014) — 8.4/10
2021-04-25: This one had been floating around towards the bottom end of my to-watch-list for a while, and I finally got an opportune moment to watch it the other night when I didn't have any work to do and no one else had something on. Anyway, it was good for al the reasons you typically hear it was good! Nice stylish shots, Gyllenhaal is a big creep, Riz Ahmed is actually really good in it too, etc. I enjoyed it, although it had the kind of ending I typically don't like.
I also forgot to post about my actual tenth film of the year, which I watched earlier in April:
Crip Camp (2020) — 8.0/10
2021-04-03: Mrs. Kong was watching this one because it was nominated for an Oscar so I joined her. It was good! I knew nothing about it going in, so I expected the documentary to be almost entirely about the camp itself, but it really had a great expanded scope, using the camp as an anchor point for the greater activism and activities that radiated out from there.

Re: Last movie you watched & your rating
I've watched my fifteenth film of the year:
Midsommar (2019) — 8.4/10
2021-05-01: I'm not really a horror fan. I usually actively dislike them. I didn't really like this one, either, but I acknowledge it as good filmmaking. There were a few cinematographic things that I rather enjoyed, for example, a lot of scenes had the main action happening in the foreground with inscrutable cult stuff happening in the background that viewers are clearly supposed to fixate on but not understand. That's fun. Also Florence Pugh's performance was great.
