I've watched my twenty-eight film of the year:
The Avengers (2012) — 9.3/10
2021-06-27: Bringing the Captain America and Thor rewatches together with a rewatch of the Avengers. Solid movie. In hindsight (or maybe it's just because I've seen it a few times) it feels like it drags at parts and is kind of perfunctory at other parts (e.g. Coulson dies, they're all sad, then they all go to New York to fight). It's also very easy to see this is a sequel to Thor—Hemsworth and Hiddleston were pretty fresh off the set of their previous movie and very much still in the swing of their roles. I have to say, I'm also pretty impressed that the weaselly little bald SHIELD agent who ends up being a Hydra in Winter Soldier had small roles in both Thor and Avengers. Nice pre-work, there.

Damn, it's been a while. I haven't watched any movies because I was on vacation, then I had to spend a week just doing yard work to catch up after vacation, and now I'm getting ready to go on vacation again.
Anyway, I've watched my twenty-ninth film of the year:
Black Widow (2021) — 7.3/10
2021-07-26: It wasn't bad. Florence Pugh was excellent in it, as expected. David Harbour was pretty good too, although his character was pretty flimsy and do-nothing. He did what he could with what he had. They also didn't do nearly enough with Taskmaster. It was just kind of a looming Terminator that somehow managed not to feel tactical or threatening. The big explodey action stuff was pretty weak and uncompelling, but some of the hand-to-hand stuff was a bit more fun. Anyway. Glad I didn't bother going to see it in the big loud deathtrap rooms.

Watched some movies on DVD recently:
- Spiderman Into The Spider-Verse: 7.8/10
It wasn't what I expected, but it was still good enough to entertain me.
- Joker: 6.7/10
A very different Joker than the ones in the Batman movies. Read there are talks about a sequel, but I might pass on that one.
- How To Tame A Dragon 3: 8.5/10
Bit of a fan of the series and movies of How To Tame A Dragon. This one was just as good as the others.
- Raya and The Last Dragon: 8.5/10
Enjoyed watching this Disney animation. Oriental + dragons is a good mix for me
- Underworld - Blood Wars: 8/10
Just as good or bad as the other 4 movies.
- Mulan: 8.5/10
A Disney live action movie .. not a remake of the cartoon version, but main story is kind of the same. Good movie but maybe a bit too short.
Tenet is the next one to watch.

Damn, it's been a while. I didn't watch any movies in August because I was on vacation, then I had to spend a week just doing yard work to catch up after vacation.
Anyway, I've watched my thirty-first and -second films of the year:
Goodfellas (1990) — 9.5/10
2021-09-10: Obviously a classic. I've seen this a few times, and I'm not even sure why we got to re-watching it but here we are. I paid more attention to Pesci's performance in this after having a chance to enjoy and respect his performance in the Irishman last year. He's great but I actually think his turn in Irishman is even better... shame he didn't secure another Oscar for it. Another thing I noticed re-watching it now is that it's essentially a story about a bunch of mooks who are too big for their britches. They're not crime-lord godfather types, they're hijackers and drug dealers. The real high-level mobster is Paulie and he's barely in it.
Captain America: Civil War (2016) — 8.6/10
2021-09-12: Another re-watch. This one ties up the Captain America series watch-through we started in June. I find this one pretty entertaining, even though the plot does suffer a bit from trying to cram all the Avengers in. The whole airport battle set-piece eats up a lot of screen time when the plot point there is literally just "Steve and Bucky have to catch a chopper to get to Siberia". So that's a problem, but the other side of that coin is that the action's entertaining, so yay us.

Anyway, I've watched my thirty-first and -second films of the year:
Primal Fear (1996) — 8.2/10
2021-09-24: Taking it back a couple decades. My parents visited a couple weekends ago and my dad picked this as our movie night movie. He had been jonesing to see it since he hadn't watched it since the '90s and remembered it being good. Primal Gere is in it as a dickhead lawyer. Young Ed Norton is also in it as The Incredible Hulk a stammering southern boy who's caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's got a nice thematic arc. And it's very, very '90s.

Just watched a movie on youtube:
Ballad from Tibet. 8/10
Very touching story about blind kids from TIbet wanting to perform on television.
It's based on China got Talent 2010 where a choir of blind kids from Tibet performed.

I've watched my first and second films of the year:
The Eternals (2021) — 7.1/10
2022-01-15: Now that The Eternals has started streaming, I've continued along with the latest phase of the MCU. It wasn't too bad. It kinda wasn't too great either? The central concept of a bunch of scattered immortals doing stuff is pretty decent, and a few of the characters are pretty decent... and the plot is pretty decent. But the action and the bad guys are mostly boring.
No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005) — 7.8/10
2022-01-20: I first watched this Scorsese documentary when it first came out back in '05, and I remember being impressed by it. Unlike some other musician bio-docs, this one has more of a laser-focus on a specific time in Dylan's career. Some of the old concert footage was interesting, but it doesn't really stay with any one song or performance long enough to fully appreciate it for the music. The best parts IMO were the backstage/semi-candid moments that were filmed back in the day, where you can really catch some of Dylan's personality.

I've watched my third and fourth films of the year:
Ex Machina (2014) — 9.5/10
2022-01-28: I've seen this before, around when it came out, but I wanted to watch it again and introduce Mrs. K to it. It still holds up just as well as it did back then, with great performances by the whole cast. I picked up on a lot more new nuances than I thought I would this time around. Mrs. K loved it way more than I expected her to. Great film overall.
Love You to Death (2019) — 4/10
2022-01-28: This is a made-for-TV movie depicting a fictionalized version of a true crime I didn't know anything about. Mrs. K loves this kind of crap lol. Anyway, even ignoring the subject matter, it wasn't great. Some of the performances were fine, but it was very oddly structured and plotted so you don't even really know what the movie is about (unless you've read the "back of the box") until halfway through. Oh well.

I've watched my fifth and sixth films of the year:
The Lost Daughter (2021) — 8.0/10
2022-02-06: Pretty good. Olivia Colman is excellent in it. I still need to digest some of Gyllenhaal's directorial choices. Interesting that Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are both in Oscar-nominated films this year.
The Power of the Dog (2021) — 9.0/10
2022-02-11: Excellent western. I had a couple theories about where I thought it might be going, and thankfully it didn't really go in any of those directions too too directly. Very nice character study and psychological drama, great setting (time & place), and great acting by Dr. Strange, Nightcrawler, and Mary-Jane Watson.
