At an obscenely early hour this morning, I watched a black-and-white film from 2019 called “The Lighthouse,” which told the tale of a couple guys who are working at a remote lighthouse and slowly start to lose their grip on sanity. It was pretty good and I enjoyed it. Hadn’t heard of it previously, but stumbled upon it and was curious so I gave it a chance.

This one's been high on my to-do list for awhile. Glad to hear you liked it.

That was filmed here! Which is a treat for us, since this place isn't a tax-paradise for filmmakers like Georgia. 🍑 But a pretty good place to film if you want an old-timey nautical setting for a Lighthouse movie. :)

Watched Dune yesterday on HBO Max. Can't say I was impressed by it. Compared with other versions of Dune that I've seen (first movie and TV series) it's ok, but it comes down to the sequels if it's going to be great. 7/10 for now.

Uh, I lost track... but I watched my seventh and eighth films of the year. Maybe more. But at least these ones:

High Life (2018) — 8.3/10

2022-04-01: Pretty good. Low-budget space movie with R-Patts. Lots of dense theming, and a good core concept.

The Negotiator (1998) — 8.3/10

2022-04-05: Pretty good. Classic '90s action drama with Samuel L. Jackson and Darkwing Duck. Lots of who's the bad crime guy type stuff. It was the '90s.

2022-01-15: 7.1/10 The Eternals (2021)
2022-01-20: 7.8/10 No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005)
2022-01-28: 9.5/10 Ex Machina (2014)
2022-01-28: 4.0/10 Love You to Death (2019)
2022-02-06: 8.0/10 The Lost Daughter (2021)
2022-02-11: 4.0/10 The Power of the Dog (2021)
2022-04-01: 8.3/10 High Life (2018)
2022-04-05: 8.3/10 The Negotiator (1998)

I watched my ninth film of the year:

Scent of a Woman (1992) — 8.8/10

2022-04-14: Pretty good. It's kind of funny to see this now, after Pacino's hijinks in this movie have become cornerstones of the cultural caricature of Pacino. Also Chris O'Donnell is a tiny little baby. It has a very '90s-movie plot structure, too.

2022-01-15: 7.1/10 The Eternals (2021)
2022-01-20: 7.8/10 No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005)
2022-01-28: 9.5/10 Ex Machina (2014)
2022-01-28: 4.0/10 Love You to Death (2019)
2022-02-06: 8.0/10 The Lost Daughter (2021)
2022-02-11: 4.0/10 The Power of the Dog (2021)
2022-04-01: 8.3/10 High Life (2018)
2022-04-05: 8.3/10 The Negotiator (1998)
2022-04-14: 8.8/10 Scent of a Woman (1992)

I watched my tenth film of the year:

The Batman (2022) — 9/10

2022-04-21: Pretty good. Great casting all the way across the board. It's a long movie with a lot of moving pieces. Different people doing different stuff. Batman figuring things out. I think RPatts' take on a younger/fresher/inexperienced Batman is pretty great. Unfortunately his Bruce Wayne didn't get as much of a chance to impress. Maybe my only complaint is that the main villain ramped the stakes up in a kind of uneven way? Hard to describe that in a short pithy paragraph without spoiling things, but it doesn't really detract from the film.

2022-01-15: 7.1/10 The Eternals (2021)
2022-01-20: 7.8/10 No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005)

2022-04-01: 8.3/10 High Life (2018)
2022-04-05: 8.3/10 The Negotiator (1998)
2022-04-14: 8.8/10 Scent of a Woman (1992)
2022-04-21: 9.0/10 The Batman (2022)

Watched The Batman earlier this week and Moonshot yesterday on HBO Max.
Can agree on a 9/10 for The Batman.

Moonshot is a nice romantic comedy. Not great, but entertaining enough. I'll give it a 6.5/10.

I watched my eleventh film of the year:

The Dead Don't Die (2019) — 8.4/10

2022-04-29: Pretty good. The cast is bananas. Of all the everyone who was in this, even among the folks who turned out fantastic performances (Adam Driver), I thought Chloe Sevigny did the best job, and I'm not usually her biggest fan. I went into this knowing it would be weird and wouldn't quite be what I was expecting, but even with that expectation, it was even more not what I was expecting than what I was expecting. Jim Jarmusch really had fun with this one. It's hard to rate, though!

2022-01-15: 7.1/10 The Eternals (2021)
2022-01-20: 7.8/10 No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005)

Watched Suicide Squad yesterday (the one with John Cena as Peacemaker). Not as good as the other one, but I'll still give it a 7/10.
Have put season 1 of Peacemaker on the watch list, but I wonder if it will be any good.
