Nonetheless fantastic game.

The Elders Scroll: Skyrim (+Dragonborn/Dawnguard): This game grew on me a lot and I ended up really enjoying it. I feel like it took a while but once I found the playstyle I liked and was able to heal and regen magicka fast enough it was a blast.
I'll will be playing Super Metroid pretty soon, but on the SNES Classic so I should be able to avoid the save issue.
Do you mean the mini? How exactly does it fix it?

By using save states! You can make a save anywhere you want - it's the same as the Wii U and 3DS virtual console, though I think the SNES Classic can hold more?

Just use it before fighting a boss or going into a hard area and reload it when you die. It was nice in a link to the past so I didn't have to gather hearts and fairies and travel to my last location every time I died.

Hmm, not trying to be a curmudgeon here, but that seems to kind of run contrary to the design of a Metroidvania. Save rooms are placed where they are and spaced out intentionally, since that's where you can get your health refilled and respawn from. It's baked into the challenge of the game and world design. Subverting that, to me, would cheapen the experience.

Having said that, I'm a big proponent of people playing and enjoying games as they please. My two cents on the matter are just that and nothing more. So carry on as you wish! Maybe Super Metroid is more fun with save states and I'm just a tryhard.

Save states definitely mess with the original design and intent of a game, but I'm okay with it. I try not to abuse it to the point of breaking the game, but I will use it to make something more convenient. Like creating one before a boss room.

In the case of Super Metroid, I've beat it before so I definitely don't mind going back with save states. I also find if I'm playing a retro game, I'm generally not interested in the arbitrary challenge that comes with old game design.

Feb. 03 - Night in the Woods (Switch)
Feb. 18 - Rayman Legends Definitive Edition (Switch)
Feb. 20 - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES Classic)
Feb. 21 - The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (3DS)

Mar. 25 - Splasher (Switch)
Mar. 31 - Overcooked! (Switch)
April 01 - Bayonetta 2 (Switch)
April 02 - Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King (Switch)

Another one down! Solid Zelda clone. It didn't control quite as well as Zelda, and the puzzles weren't as creative, but it filled that itch for a 2D adventure/exploration game. Also had surprisingly good music.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst: Really fun game running around is so enjoyable and story was great. Expand on the original in imo a good way I don't understand the poor reviews.

Reverie: I platted this. This game is just adorable perfect level of puzzle challenge and the combat was fairly easy. So many kiwi/Australian references it was just a blast from start to finish. I beat it in a day and platted it about 30 minutes after I woke up.

Also I just broke my record of games beaten in the year. It use to be 25 from 2011. Currently at 27. Next goal is 50.

Beaten:
1/8 - Flywrench (PSN)
1/13 - Batman: The Telltale Series (PSN)
1/15 - Windjammers (PSN)
1/29 - Panzer Dragoon (Saturn)
2/5 - Hey! Pikmin (3DS)
2/5 - Panzer Dragoon II Zwei (Saturn)
3/13 - Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap (PS4)
4/1 - Forza Horizon 3 (Xbone)
4/8 - Celeste (PSN)

Celeste is an outstanding game. I was intrigued by the gameplay, but I was hooked by the story. Its excellent plot and themes were a huge, positive surprise for me. I expect this one will come up when I'm considering my GotY in December. Everyone should play it.

Completed:
1/13 - Batman: The Telltale Series (PSN)

I beat Minit in a sitting this weekend. ~90 minutes and 66% clear. Will go back for NG+ and full completion soon, but I'm not in a rush to do so - it's the kind of game that derives much of its enjoyment from the discovery, so forgetting things won't be a burden. Nice little game, well priced for what it's doing. I'd describe it as a tactile point-and-click adventure with a Zelda motif.

Definitely a novel concept, might give it a try one day.

April 02 - Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King (Switch)
April 09 - VVVVVV (3DS)

Felt like going back to VVVVVV and remembered I had it on 3ds. Beat it in an hour and a half, which is nowhere close to a speed run. Very cool game.
