Huge fan of the mario and luigi games through the years, so I was happy to see them come back in a new game. Honestly always wondered what the series would look like on a home console.

Combat in the game is as great as ever, and despite a new developer it was nice to see so many callbacks to previous games, from deliberate references to animations of the characters themselves. The game has a lot of charm. I do think it was about 10 hours too long (took me 45 hours to finish) and the script is (imo) not as funny as previous games in the series. Still, great entry this series.

2024-11-26 - Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (PS5) - First run through this solid Castlevania homage. Looks like I have to beat it a few more times for more endings/difficulty modes, but it's short and fun. Finished Nightmare mode as well. The different characters add slightly different abilities that let you reach different areas in the stages or tackle the bosses in different ways, so much of the challenge of the various endings will just be doing things differently.

For someone who has played very little of Sonic, I felt like I got a series history lesson playing Sonic X Shadow Generations. Good rundown of the notable characters, bosses, stages and music through the years (up to 2010ish).

Sonic Generations itself was decent - the Switch between 2D and 3D worked, didn't bother with any more challenges than I needed to.

Shadow Generations was the highlight of the package. The hub world felt akin to Mario 3D World Bowser's Fury, but then having you play through good 3D "Sonic" levels. It felt like a good mix, and the most cohesive 3D Sonic experience I've played.

MM9 remains one of my favorite "classic" Mega Man games. Great levels with great music. The final stretch can feel unreasonably difficult, but not too frustrating with the checkpoint save system of the Legacy Collection. I actually liked this save system compared to quick save/rewind you see in most emulators. Feels a little more true to the intent of the game, while not forcing you to restart a whole stage due to running out of lives.

One last game to round out the year, and it's a classic: Portal. Fun to run through again. I loaded it up after looking to burn 15 minutes and of course I had to come back to it.

That's another year in the books. Pretty solid overall - spent a lot of time playing old games and making use of Nintendo Switch Online. Highlight was definitely Octopath Traveler II, fantastic game. Shout out as well to the Banjo games, Zelda EOW, Advance Wars and the Castlevania GBA games.

[Kong Wen]

The year's denouement was dominated by many runs through Curse of the Moon to collect various endings, and runs through many Capcom beat 'em ups, with a couple long slow burn / cozy games thrown in for good measure. I had a slow start, but this year ended up being my second best gaming year of the pandemic, which also makes it my second best year since the heady days of 2014. Only two platinum trophies, but there are a couple that have been simmering that will pop in '25.
