Meh, people's complaints about Death Stars are vastly overstated if you actually think about the movies in their own context.

Alright just got back from viewing The Force Awakens. Loved it just as much as the first time, all the beats hit just as hard. Definitely my favourite of the four I've watched. I noticed a few extra little nods to the old movies that I didn't before, lots of neat little cameos. The Han/Leia thing hit me a little harder this time as I knew the dynamic between the characters more.

Episode VII spoilers
Spoiler
Yeah after seeing the Force Awakens again, the Death Star sequence didn't feel like any of the others. It was more of a rescue mission than a focus on destroying the Death Star, more like a means for Han, Rey and Finn to encounter Kylo Ren.

Seeing it a second time, I like that you can almost hear the uncertainty in Kylo Ren's voice whenever he talks. He does not have the respect among the First Order that Vader did with the Empire.

After more thought I think the title "The Force Awakens" is really focused on Rey. I think it's likely she was trained by Luke when she was younger, but hasn't used the Force much since. This movie is her awakening as she discovers powers she forgot she ever had. That's why I think it became so natural for her to use her powers near the end, because she was remembering the training she received from so long ago. The force was dormant inside her, but now is awakened.

Bone Tomahawk 2015

Western meets horror. It has some fun dialogue and unnerving scenes. A very solid watch.

We've been watching recent Western movies now after Bone Tomahawk. We followed it with Slow West 2015, it was alright, 6/10. Then True Grit 2010, a very enjoyable watch, 9/10.

If anyone knows any good western movies made the last decades, I would appreciate a recommendation.

3:10 To Yuma with Russell Crowe is pretty good. I've never seen the original so I can't compare but this remake is good when viewed on its own

Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight. :)

Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood) is a modern masterpiece.

I'm partial to Tombstone (the one starring Russel & Kilmer).

As I understand the tone is completely different from the original and the level of violence is obviously much higher. I've never seen the Russell Crowe film, but the original is probably my all-time favorite Western.

I just watched The Hateful Eight yesterday afternoon while I was snowed in. Oddly appropriate, given the setting of the film (people who are snowed in by an unexpected blizzard). It was good. Classic Tarantino, and when I say classic I mean it in the classic sense that it's similar to his older work (specifically Reservoir Dogs). I feel like Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained are more refined overall, but this is a very different kind of narrative, so it's tough to compare it to those. He does do some interestingly nuanced things as a director that I haven't really seen Tarantino do before. I might have to stew on it a bit more.

Unforgiven was a good watch indeed. It didn't really have a west frontier sense of adventure like the other western movies I've seen lately, it was just plain depressing.

5 out of 6 bullets.

The Revenant

The movie was very well shot, and very well acted. Props to everyone involved. The story itself is interesting, and subtle, which was nice.

It's a good movie, I left the theatre in silence. It's not for everyone though, and I wouldn't say it's a movie I'm dying to see again. Just a solid experience.
