Another interesting tie-breaker between a classic portable RPG and an open world hero beater!

1991 - Final Fantasy Legend III - GB
2011 - Batman: Arkham City - Multiplatform

I have fondness for FFL3, but I have a really hard time thinking of it as better than its predecessor, which was more imaginative, more interesting, and more internally consistent. Either of its predecessors for that matter.

It did have some cool parts, but I don't see it as BGE material.

I agree with you. Final Fantasy Legend III was good, but the first two were much better. Incidentally, I feel the same way about Arkham City: it's a fine open world game, but the original is a masterpiece.

It's interesting you say that, because Akitoshi Kawazu, the creator of the SaGa series(being both director and scenario writer on the previous two games) was not involved in the third game(perhaps because he was working on Romancing SaGa). One suspects his lack of involvement had something to do with the lack of internal consistency etc. that you mentioned.

EDIT: So the point is clear to anyone who may not know, the Final Fantasy Legend games are actually the first entries in the SaGa series. The North American localization took on the name of Final Fantasy Legend to make more money, but in the original Japanese realease they were called SaGa(first one for example was called Makai Toushi SaGa).

While in my opinion Asylum is superior, I still really enjoyed City. It's one of the few modern games that I've completed twice.

I've never played legends 3.
Arkham City on the other hand is an overall improvement on an already good game, so it gets my vote.

Arkham City definitely falls into the "good, not great" category for me, but it gets my vote regardless.

Arkham City will advance to the next round as the final game in its bracket.
