Top 256 — Week 1 — Poll 27

Post by This Old Neon »

Welcome to the #BGE2020 Elimination Round of 256!

Each game is seeded based on its performance in the two opening rounds of pools. Every game in the Upper Bracket has defeated multiple other games in 1-on-1 polls to get to this point. These are still the best of the best.

Polls are updated weekly, typically on Sunday or Monday. Check back throughout the week to make sure you don't miss a vote!

HOW TO VOTE

This is easy. You only get one vote per poll. The game with the most votes wins. In the event of a tie, the higher seed advances, so don't get complacent!

Both of these deserve to advance. Had to give credit to one of my personal favorites though in Castlevania III.

This is yet another poll where my philosophy of voting for important/influential is going to win out. Castlevania III is strong, and fun, but its influence points go to the original Castlevania. This one iterates on it a bit, but it's a child of the OG's influence.

Beat Saber nearly single-handedly justifies the existence of VR as a new gaming medium. It shows you, instantly, why this new technology is different than just slashing boxes on a flat screen with a controller. It's pure, intuitive gameplay distilled down to a Tetris-like level of perfection for any skill level. It's just as fun for beginners on basic/easy mode as it is for veterans on the harder modes, so no one is missing out on entertainmentpleasures. This is a true game design template for a new medium.

My beef with Beat Saber is primarily technical. One’s light saber suddenly translocating away from one’s hand at a bizarre angle really kills the mood. Maybe I had disproportionate glitches in my outings but it didn’t live up to the vision it represented for me. That said, my son loves it and plays it frequently. So I get its appeal but I can’t vote for it over my favorite Castlevania game.
