Top 256 — Week 1 — Poll 26

Welcome to the #BGE2020 Elimination Round of 256!

Each game is seeded based on its performance in the two opening rounds of pools. Every game in the Upper Bracket has defeated multiple other games in 1-on-1 polls to get to this point. These are still the best of the best.

Polls are updated weekly, typically on Sunday or Monday. Check back throughout the week to make sure you don't miss a vote!

HOW TO VOTE

This is easy. You only get one vote per poll. The game with the most votes wins. In the event of a tie, the higher seed advances, so don't get complacent!

This is another one of those polls where importance/influence has to win out. Zork is one of the classic text adventure games, a super-early way of providing the player with a huge, vivid world to interact with despite technical limitations. Meanwhile there are like 4 other games where Mario hops around in 3D in this upper bracket. Galaxy 2 isn't really bringing anything unique to the table or paving the way for anything new.

Galaxy 2 is better than 1 imo so easy vote. Zork is just not my kind of game.

This so not fair. I guess that's bound to be the case with the top 256 but jeez...SMG 2 is maybe even better than SMG, but Zork is..Zork. I'm going to give it to the GUE just because of the massive popularity text adventures managed to have in the days before graphics, and the huge influence they had on adventure games in the days before FPS games came around. Zork is also genuinely funny, though maybe less so in this original installment. I actually kind of like the final games in the series - Grand Inquisitor - the best, and wonder if it was ever nominated for BGE and where it wound up. And Infocom was the king of special inserts ("feelies") and did some truly pioneering work with their ZIL programming language which allowed them to port their games to more than a dozen home computer platforms. And it started with Zork.

The only Zorks ever nominated for any BGE have been this and Zork II. Meaning Grand Inquisitor will be eligible for the next one!
