Top 256 — Week 4 — Poll 9

Post by This Old Neon »

Welcome to the #BGE2020 Elimination Round of 256!

Each game is seeded based on its performance in the two opening rounds of pools. Every game in the Upper Bracket has defeated multiple other games in 1-on-1 polls to get to this point. These are still the best of the best.

Polls are updated weekly, typically on Sunday or Monday. Check back throughout the week to make sure you don't miss a vote!

HOW TO VOTE

This is easy. You only get one vote per poll. The game with the most votes wins. In the event of a tie, the higher seed advances, so don't get complacent!

I'll have to come back to this one. Dawn of Sorrow is the sequel to the best Castlevania game. I can't believe Persona 5 is this old. I think #BGE2020 lasting for 3+ years has stretched time and space.

I just can’t decide….haven’t played Persona 5 yet but I liked Persona 4 a lot…

Am abstaining.

I love that time and space have finally started warping though. The prophecy must be true….
I never thought I would feel this way, but now I know. Now I know. I never thought I would see things as I see them now, but now I know. I never thought I would hurt so bad, but now I know. Now I know.

As one of the resident Persona junkies I found Persona 5 pretty disappointing in retrospect. It feels like the series has been evolutionary rather than revolutionary for 15 years now. There are a few fun twists/turns, and the core gameplay is fun enough, but for all of its critiques of society, social media, politicians etc. it really doesn't have a lot interesting or even cathartic to say. Not that P3 or P4 did, but they weren't focused on fundamental (and relatable) injustices in society. I'm not tempted to play Royal or Strikers and it doesn't even have anything to do with my lack of free time.

Spoilers for base Persona 5:
Spoiler
The game could have gone a very different direction once Shido's heart was changed, but he didn't go public because he warned his cronies and made preparations. Revolution isn't made in a day, and changing one person's heart doesn't change the machine. But instead suddenly there was even more magic (Yaldabaoth) behind everything, and we just had to resolve society's problems by shooting god in the head with a magic gun. And then the characters move on with their lives, as usual.
I'm probably just a bit reluctant to admit I've aged out of the target audience for these games, but they do feel like they've become more formulaic and more anime influenced as time passes... and they were already pretty anime-influenced.
