I feel reasonably confident that I will like FF6 more than ALttP when I finally play the former. Alas, I have not yet, so I'll have to abstain.

FFVI is one of those games that really reminds me of how good the FF series used to be before Nomura turned it into his own shitty plaything.

Is Final Fantasy VI on PSN the same as the snes version? What about the steam version?

The PSN one is the PS1 version, which is basically just a slightly slowed-down port of the SNES one. The Steam version is a port of the mobile port, which is completely hideous, though I'm not sure what other changes there are.

How do you mean slowed down?

Loading time for menus, battles, moving to new areas, etc.

It's not totally unbearable, but if you played the SNES version first it's really frustrating to wait 3-4 seconds for the menu to pop up, or 5 seconds for the battle music to kick in... If you have a Wii you could get the SNES version on VC there.

The PC port is supposed to include some improvements (Cyan's ability now charges 'passively', for example), but the graphics are a patchwork of different sprite styles.

There's no PAL version on VC :( I also don't know how much I can trust Virtual Console anymore considering its soon to be 3 generations old and not linked to any account. PSN seems like a safer purchase.

The slowdown in the PS1 version isn't as awful as it's usually made out to be, though. IIRC, they managed to fix most of the slowdown issues for the port of FFVI. The earlier ports in the Chronicles/Anthology series were worse, and those are where the whole PS1 port library get their bad reputation from.
