TOP 64 — Week 3 — Poll 4

Welcome to the #BGE2020 Elimination Round of 64!

Each game is seeded based on its performance in the two opening rounds of pools. Every game in the Upper Bracket has defeated multiple other games in 1-on-1 polls to get to this point. These are still the best of the best.

Polls are updated weekly, typically on Monday. Check back throughout the week to make sure you don't miss a vote!

HOW TO VOTE

This is easy. You only get one vote per poll. The game with the most votes wins. In the event of a tie, the higher seed advances, so don't get complacent!

Zero Mission is a remake of the original Metroid that actively adds elements that make the game worse (the extended zero suit epilogue and Ridley fight is a good concept, but not executed in a way that elevates the over gameplay experience). So it's fine on its own. When held up against other Metroid games it's not as great or impressive, especially up against the much more creative and technically impressive Fusion, it's direct contemporary.

Torment, by contrast, is a genre-defining, era-defining, and in fact a medium-defining video games. Yes, medium-defining as in it's one of the video games that makes video games video games. Anyone who has ever enjoyed a Baldur's Like owes it to themselves to play this game. This is how interactive narrative experiences work.

I’ll have to abstain here…not loving this entry to Metroid to distraction and never having played the other.

Planescape: Torment has been on my to-do list for a long time, and although I think Zero Mission rocks and am not so down on it like Kong, I still feel comfortable voting for the former here. It heavily inspired Disco Elysium, which I have played and comes well-endorsed enough by friends I trust to get my vote.
