For Halloween, I decided to finally beat a Resident Evil game. Years ago I played some of 4, but other than that I've got minimal experience with the series. I'd heard such good things about the RE1 remake that I figured I'd just start there. I took two things away from this game. 1) The REmake is as good as everyone says. 2) I am not cut out for the Survival Horror genre. This game stressed me out and scared me big time, but I'd consider that mission accomplished as far as this game is concerned. With respect to picking a legitimately frightening Halloween game, I couldn't have done better. Still, the stress of resource management and limited saves ultimately led me to play this game largely with a guide. Where possible, I tried to solve puzzles on my own, but since normal exploration poses such a risk to kill you and force you to load a save that may have been made ages ago (since saves are rationed), the stress of that was just too much for me. In hindsight, I think the smart thing would have been to play the game on an easier difficulty my first time through. Increased item drops and fewer/less deadly enemies would have incentivized me to explore the mansion using my own brain/intuition, without worrying that the next corner I round could reset all my progress in the last half-hour. Nevertheless, despite all that, I still thought this game was brilliant. I got a great, gripping Halloween scarefest, and that's exactly what I was looking for.

After finishing off Resident Evil, I found myself back in a state of not being sure what to play. With my PS4 coming in the mail in under a week, though, my mind turned to cleaning up some of my PS3 backlog. I started this game up months ago, but I got within a couple levels of the final boss and abandoned it in the hectic time surrounding my graduation, cross-country move, etc. Went back and knocked it out this afternoon. Consensus is that this is the finest of the PS2 entries of this series, and I probably agree with that, although my impression is pretty dijoint, inasmuch as 6 months have passed since I played it prior.
Not sure if I'll go back and get the platinum on this one like I did the first two. It seems to be a significantly longer investment than those games. Regardless, it's nice to simply have all three games on the HD Collection finished. All that's left is to knock Ratchet: Deadlocked and R&C: Size Matters (PSP), and I'll finally be able to move on to the PS3 series. Hopefully in fewer than the two and a half years it took me to finish this HD collection.

Received Layton Vs Wright for Christmas last year and finally completed it today. I started it a couple months back and didn't make it too far. I picked it up again a couple days ago and I've been playing nonstop since. It's a really good game, the two game styles really complemented each other. I always enjoy these goofy fighting game stories. They introduce the characters and give you an hour or two to get used to any new mechanics. Fun stuff. I've also quite enjoyed SFV competitively. I'm trying my best right now to crack the Super Bronze rank. Think I'll stick with this game for awhile.

Finally beat the first game I ever Kickstarted (and possibly the last). MN9 is a pretty decent game with some cool ideas (killing bad buys honestly feels pretty great), but I still haven't gotten over how poorly the Kickstarter was handled. I never received my physical reward, for one, and I was not responded to when I inquired about it. Certainly that colors my impression of the entire game, but trying to keep that from muddying it too much, I come to the conclusion that it fits snugly in the good-but-definitely-not-great range. I don't regret playing it, but I absolutely regret backing it.
Meanwhile, Yooka-Laylee is on the horizon and looks absolutely delightful... and I didn't back it. Honestly, seems like the way to go. I may have missed out on early access or an exclusive trinket or two, but I avoided the risk of throwing my money away, and I'll get to play the game anyway. I guess I'm glad not everyone thinks like me so cool stuff like Yooka keeps happening, but I just really don't want to get burned like I did on MN9 ever again. Not a great feeling.
