BOTTOM 16 — Poll 3

Welcome to the #BGE2020 Elimination Round Lower Bracket!
Each game in the lower bracket is still seeded based on its performance in the two opening rounds of pools! Every game in the lower bracket has already been defeated by another game in a 1-on-1 poll to get to this point. This is their chance to claw their way back into the main event... but the stakes are high. The games that lose in these polls are out of the tournament for good! The games that survive will face the next crop of upper bracket losers in the next round.
Polls are updated weekly, typically on Monday. Check back throughout the week to make sure you don't miss a vote!
HOW TO VOTE
This is easy. You only get one vote per poll. The game with the most votes wins. In the event of a tie, the higher seed advances, so don't get complacent!

Resident Evil was a game changer (get it?!?!). Honestly though it’s not the best survival horror game but it broadened what games are able to do.
Breath of the Wild is just more Zelda.

Breath of the Wild is just more Zelda.
Breath of the Wild is the most different
Zelda since
Ocarina of Time took the series into 3D. I would even argue that it's the first truly successful execution of the Zelda series "mission" in 3D, which is why I'm voting for it here.
The world is immense, and unlike previous attempts, it's actually full—of people going about their lives, stuff to do, varied wildlife and vignettes, etc. Combine that excellent living world with the truly original Zelda-like freedom of being able to go anywhere and do anything, and you have a game that can be experienced by many different kinds of players in their own ways without arbitrarily altering the game rules. Want to fight and collect and farm? Easy. Want to rush the story and beat up Ganon? Easy. Want to explore and go sight-seeing without really progressing? Easy. They finally did it.
Not to take anything away from
Resident Evil, because I do think it's hugely influential and important in the development of the survival horror genre.

Unless I’m missing something this was like their fifth 3D effort. I’m glad they’re getting better but I’ve never beaten a 3D Zelda game before because I get bored or distracted. I’ve only beaten a handful of Resident Evil games but feel like I need to acknowledge its trail blazing too. If it were Resident Evil 5, I’d be less compelled to vote for it here. Similarly if this were Zelda 1, it’d be a tougher vote for me.

I won't vote for BotW here since I didn't play it, but pretty deep into TOTK this is what makes it stand out for me. The original Zelda was an open world, and you had to figure out what to do. I don't recall exactly how much sequence-breaking you could do, but it was certainly less linear than "the next dungeon is blocked by the last dungeon's tool" which felt like where the series went afterwards.
Since LTTP, what turned me off of the 3D Zeldas I tried was that they were rote and linear. Sometimes they'd introduce a new tool or a new concept, but the world never felt truly open.
While TOTK isn't my favorite game ever, seeing an open-world Zelda game with implicit puzzles and environmental problem-solving feels like a natural extension of the original game. If BOTW got halfway there,

Ironic that this is the reason I'm not voting for it. I wanted more Zelda and ended up getting something different and then the same thing happened again with TotK and now we haven't had a 3D Zelda Dungeon style game since Skyward Sword which was 13 years ago.
BotW while fun was still a huge disappointment due to this.

Zelda was getting stale. Skyward Sword was a testament to this. Given how well-reviewed BotW was and especially how well it sold, don't expect a return to traditional 3D Zelda titles anytime soon. Although I wouldn't put it passed Nintendo to release a remake of one of them.

You're missing something Share. BotW is anything but 'More Zelda'
