I’ve been waiting for the sun to come up. Waiting for the showers to stop. Waiting for the penny to drop. One time. And I’ve been standing in a cloud of plans. Standing on the shifting sands. Hoping for an open hand. One time.

Whoa. It occurs to me I beat this one more than 30 years ago. Glad to see you gave it its proper due!

[EDIT] Modest post is modest. Let's highlight this monster:

Depends if you think abusing save states is giving it it's proper due ;)

Meh, front to back is good enough. Let's face it, we all warped to 8 back in the day anyway (though I did eventually beat it with a friend level by level). I mean there's a continue code besides!

Beaten:
1/8 - Flywrench (PSN)
1/13 - Batman: The Telltale Series (PSN)
1/15 - Windjammers (PSN)
1/29 - Panzer Dragoon (Saturn)
2/5 - Hey! Pikmin (3DS)
2/5 - Panzer Dragoon II Zwei (Saturn)
3/13 - Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap (PS4)
4/1 - Forza Horizon 3 (Xbone)
4/8 - Celeste (PSN)
4/23 - Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS)
7/13 - Mega Man 5 (NES [PS4])
8/8 - WarioWare Gold (3DS)
9/23 - Final Fantasy X HD Remaster (PS2 [PS4])

I have, at long last, crossed off perhaps my longest-standing gaming to-do item. I have beaten a Final Fantasy game. This tenth entry in the hallowed series was a gift, so my initial impetus for playing it was feeling beholden to that. But it quickly grabbed me with its cast of characters, scenic environments, wonderful soundtrack, and fundamentally sound and gimmick-free combat system. Regrettably, I can't send myself back to the turn of the millennium when this game was released, so I'll never fully understand its impact, but I certainly can appreciate its maintained solidness in the same way I have the many other series I've caught up on many years late. FFX is great. I'd recommend it to any JRPG fan or really any fan of quality media.

Playing this game also got me thinking. I was initially slightly reluctant to begin it because gaming time has become scarce for me lately, so JRPGs are an even more daunting undertaking than usual. I've tried to balance out my life and become more well-rounded (in various self-defined ways), and that's resulted in a dramatic reduction in the time I devote to games. Consequently, to beat FFX in the two months and change it took me, I played it to virtual exclusivity in the game time I did have, and I've blitzed through the endgame the past week or so to clear my calendar for Mega Man 11. My college self would be astonished that this took me so long. The reason I have (or had) been a backlog fiend for so long was because I strongly valued building a wide breadth of knowledge of video games as medium. That was deeply ingrained into my identity. It's weird to see that fade now. I'm still likely to hit the 15 games beaten mark I set in the resolutions thread, but that's far from the 41 game output of my 2013 self. This is strictly good, mind you. I'm doing all sorts of things with my life now that I wasn't then. It's just a paradigm shift. I guess the short version is just that it's a strange experience to deprioritize something that was once at the very forefront of my self-image.

Nothing like the Game Clear thread for a little public introspection, eh?

Completed:
1/13 - Batman: The Telltale Series (PSN)
7/13 - Mega Man 5 (NES [PS4])

Bayonetta done! I think I might have enjoyed the story in this one more than the sequel, but it may have been due to me knocking this one out over a few days rather than a few weeks.

The combat didn't feel as smooth though, for some reason I couldn't pull out combos like I could in the second one. It was actually kind of annoying so I just slapped the game on easy and enjoyed it a lot more.

Undertale was a very funny game to play. I've beaten it once now, I spared everyone but two, who I couldn't figure out how to spare. Sounds like there's a good amount to be seen with different path actions and playthroughs, but I don't think I'll try playing it again anytime soon.
