Best Light Gun Game (Round One)

Welcome to This Old Neon’s fourth official “BEST GAME EVER!!!” Project.

Round One of the “Best Light Gun Game” side-event includes the initial batch of low-seeded games from the nomination phase. There are 2 polls of 8-9 games each. If a game you nominated doesn’t appear in this round, it probably received enough nominations to get a bye into the next round.

Han Solo, who submitted this category, has this to say by way of clarification: “my intentions were to include any type of game where you aim a physical controller at the screen to shoot objects. So a game like The House of the Dead: Overkill would definitely count, because you play it with a Wiimote or a Move controller aimed at the TV despite the controller not actually using light gun technology.”
  • You can vote for UP TO FOUR (4) games per poll, or skip a poll entirely.
  • The top 4 games from each poll will advance to Round Two.
  • You can’t change your votes once they’ve been submitted, so click carefully. Voting closes on Saturday at midnight ADT.
Don’t forget to vote in the main event and find your way to the other user-submitted categories at https://thisoldneon.com/bge!

I nominated Pop, it was a $5 WiiWare game, I think one of the first games to hit the service.

Really simple game, tons of bubbles on the screen, use the Wii mote to point at them and pop them. Simple action that was expanded upon with a few mechanics, like chaining different colors for a higher score. I spent hours playing this back on Wii, one of the few arcade-esc experiences I really got into. I would try again and again to make it as far as I could, I think I made it up to level 18 or so, which probably involved playing for a good 40 minutes straight.

I don't know if I'll vote for it here, but it was nice remembering this game.

Pretty sure I had Pop, but I don't know if I'll be able to download it back to the Wii now that the shop is closed down...? Would be nice to pop a yellowing Wiimote into a big plastic blaster and shoot some balloons.

I did a mass redownload before the shop closed, but I'm actually not sure if I redownloaded Pop now that you mention it

I should have thought of that, but I think I just banked on my VC games being on the SD card and/or easily pirated. Never even thought of my WiiWare games. Oh well.

We had tons of votes in this category, but I only went with House of the Dead and the Time Crisis games, at least for this round.
