Not ludicrous at all. The game's level design and pacing are just about perfect. Also the graphics and atmosphere are pretty impressive for 1987. Really, R-Type even to this day is a pretty polished game, and there's really no comparison if one is talking about what came before it. I don't see anyone criticizing Metroid Prime's janky level design, but people are going to complain about R-Type?
