2015 Game Clear Thread

1/17 - Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary (Xbone [360 [Xbox]])

Boy, denoting the console for this one's a doozy. It's a port of a 360 game that was a remake of an Xbox game! In any case, I beat it. In my early youth, I was too much of a contrarian to sink my teeth into this game in its infancy, so the series as a whole went on to pass me by. I didn't really care, either. However, when the MCC came out, I figured I could grab it and at least play through Halo 1 to see what it was all about. I also have a friend who is an enormous Halo fan, so I knew that even if I didn't like it, I could bear co-oping through it with him. I actually thought it was pretty decent. The 360 version was a disaster because the framerate was just hideous, but the Xbone version amends that issue. It's certainly not an amazing game, but I had a suitably fun time with it, and I'm sure I'll have a good enough time romping through Halo 2 with him whenever we get around to it.

Best entry in the series, no doubt about it. I'm tempted to call it my AAA of the year - and yes, I'm edging out Dark Souls. I have a few minor gripes with the game, but the shooting is rock solid and feels great, and the story managed to find a really nice line between comical, bonkers alt-history and moments of legitimate poignancy. Really a phenomenal game, and may even edge out Dishonored in terms of games that give you the option of stealth and balls-out shooting without crippling either option.

This Pokemon entry was much more enjoyable than Pokemon X. I'm finding lots to do postgame as well so that's nice, having good fun.
