I kicked off the new year in style, watching one of my favourite movies of all time with my sister. Maybe 2025 will be OK.
I watched my first film of the year:
Perfect Days (2023) — 10.0/10
Is this my first 10/10 in my years of writing these? I don't remember. Anyway I gushed about this film when I first saw it a couple months ago. It's rewarding on a second viewing. The strength of the film is in its layered portrayal of e.g. loneliness and contentment as not simple one-dimensional emotions or states (sad, bad, good). The beginning draws us in close, and then as the film unfolds, we slowly begin to feel little connections outward. Beautiful. I keep trying not to say too much because I don't want to ruin it for anyone, but I may write/record a proper review later.

I watched my second film of the year:
Tár (2022) — 9.0/10
Excellent character study of a famous person already at the height of her power, whose abuses of that power are subsumed into the backstory and constantly leak through to the fore. Great and captivating way to frame that tension. Cate Blanchett gives a remarkable performance. Actually there are a lot of small scenes with no dialogue, just little creepy vignettes, that build her character up in interesting subtle ways, so kudos to the director and editor and everyone involved, really. This was nominated in 6 Academy Awards categories, and lost 5 of them to Everything Everywhere All at Once, and I think Tár was stronger in most of them. Close contest.

I finally got around to cleaning up the collection of Wes Anderson's Netflix shorts bundled with "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar", which I watched on its own back when it came out.
"The Swan" (2023) — 7.2/10
"The Rat Catcher" (2023) — 7.0/10
"Poison" (2023) — 7.2/10
The stage play-style shorts take Wes Anderson's now stereotypical style to its natural conclusion. I think "The Swan" might be the best of these, elevated by Rupert Friend's performance.

I watched my third film of the year:
Pearl (2022) — 7.0/10
I didn't realize till after watching it and reading up about it that this is a prequel to another film. Oh well! I don't think I'll watch its predecessor.
This was fine. It's a stylistic slasher. Not really my genre. It's made to look & sound like old Hollywood/Technicolor films. Mia Goth is excellent in it at least. And she co-wrote it. There's one excellent scene later in the film.

I watched my fourth film of the year:
Nosferatu (2024) — 9.4/10
This was excellent. Pure Eggers. Great direction, cinematography, especially in the beginning. The use of visual & editing techniques to show the power of the Nosferatu over "Harker" without showing dumg magical stuff on screen was great. Great vision & portrayal of the title character. Willem is always a treat. I'll have to let it simmer then watch it again (though not anytime soon) to really settle in to how I feel about it. Love the plague rats.

I watched my fifth film of the year:
The Northman (2022) — 9.3/10
This was excellent. Pure Eggers. Maybe I have a bias that warms me to it a little more than I would normally be, having just read both the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda last summer, so I had the narrative structure of the sagas fresh in my mind and recognized them immediately in the quest plot of this film. I loved the mostly-nordic cast and the traditional ethnic music and the way in which their religion suffuses the action. One of the better Hamlet adaptations out there.

Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) — 9.1/10
Ensemble crime drama about a cabal of mass murderers who think money is more important than people. The plot itself is fine and does a couple things I really like (e.g. exposing the villains at the start instead of saving it up for a surprise twist), but it's more interesting to me to read as a microcosm.
