Re: Top 64 Tie-Breaker 3/3: Shadow of Yoshi
Rather than making something mechanical out of art, like so many "artsy" games end up attempting to do (a recent example is Child of Light, which is a storybook with some gameplay tacked on), Shadow of the Colossus makes something artistic out of mechanics. It focuses down on a core feature of most games (boss fights) and develops them into a great opus.
On the other hand, Yoshi's Island is something like the 50th game featuring Mario. They needed an excuse to make Yoshi the main character of a game, so they made Mario & Luigi into screaming babies...

I'd give Yoshi's Island a little more credit than that, it was a fun, inventive platformer to be sure. But I agree with you on Shadow of the Collosus.Kong Wen wrote:Rather than making something mechanical out of art, like so many "artsy" games end up attempting to do (a recent example is Child of Light, which is a storybook with some gameplay tacked on), Shadow of the Colossus makes something artistic out of mechanics. I might be inclined to believe that if a single person chimed in with a single reason to consider it inventive. The Shoemaker wrote:I'd give Yoshi's Island a little more credit than that, it was a fun, inventive platformer to be sure.Kong Wen wrote:On the other hand, Yoshi's Island is something like the 50th game featuring Mario. I thought the idea of eating enemies and creating eggs to throw was a pretty new idea for the platforming genre, mixed in with a timed based health system rather than a traditional linear health system. Also, Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy!Kong Wen wrote:I might be inclined to believe that if a single person chimed in with a single reason to consider it inventive. The Shoemaker wrote:I'd give Yoshi's Island a little more credit than that, it was a fun, inventive platformer to be sure.Kong Wen wrote:On the other hand, Yoshi's Island is something like the 50th game featuring Mario. I don't think it should go into the Top 32 though, nor should it win over Shadow of the Collosus.

Yoshi's Island is more of an annoyance than good. I've tried to enjoy it several times but I just can't.
Shadow of the Colossus all the way.

It's not that inventive, but it is fun. I haven't played shadow of the colossus though so I'll refrain from making comparisons.

Re: Top 64 Tie-Breaker 3/3: Shadow of Yoshi
This is the only one so far which seems like there's a clear winner. Because the top ranked team gets through for a tie sotc needs 4 votes in 19 hours to win.
Drumble doesn't respect the sigs so here's a link to my backloggery

Ack, where are we going to find 2 more good voters in 1 hour?!
